RAINBOW no question about it.

Just got a Kenmore Canister and WOW, what a difference! It really makes quick work out that task. I hope it has lasting power. Sears had a really great sale, we got it for half price.

No luck with Bissell upright pet hair model lasted only about 9 months, Bissell before that lasted only about a year.

I had a "Rainbow" for years and it's the best I've ever had. I have two dogs plus 3 cats (2 longhair) and a messy husband. Nothing I've tried has worked better. I have allergies to dust and I used to have to wear a face mask every time I vacuumed. The "Rainbow" took care of that problem. They are expensive, but mine lasted about 15 years. Yvette

While we are on the topic...What do you guys recommend for carpet cleaner (wet) vaccums?? How often do you guys shampoo your carpets or do you get it done professionally? I heard you could go to home depot to rent a carpet vaccuum to shampoo. I notice when walking into houses with dogs and carpet the bottom of the socks looks very dirty. I also heard that if you shampoo your carpet too much you can ruin it, then will have to replace it in the long run..is that true?

I have a Shark Pursuit for the hair. It's bagless with a hepa filter. Works amazing and much cheaper than many other models. Whatever you choose, make certain you get a bagless.  As for carpets, I only have one area rug in the living room and I use the Bissel Little Green for spot removal. Karen

Thanks you guys, I'll look into all of those and the prices on them also. We have a very nice vac here, but since I still live with my parents I don't want to take it and use it every day for dog hair.

The Vaccum I use is less than $50. I use a Shop vac. Bought my at walmart for $32, Sears version has some more HP.  I have three dogs two American bulldog and a GSD.I will take the GSD hair ove rny ABs hair  anyday. The grooming of the GSD is a pain in the ass but at least the GSd is easy to vaccum and stays in clumps. My Abs when they shed hair gets every where you at least imagine, the house, your clothes, your car...Love my shop Vac.

I have both a Dyson and a Rainbow.  I did an experiment with both, vacuuned a room with the Dyson then the Rainbow.  I then emptied and cleaned both and vacuumed a different room and hallway with the Rainbow then Dyson.   I know...I was bored that day and my wife had spent about $1200 on the Dyson and then we were buying a new DC-17 a month or two later.  My wife loves the Rainbow, but I hate emptying that water bowl.  So, the results that I achieved were nearly identical between the two.  The Dyson still picked up dirt that the Rainbow left  when using the Rainbow first.  The Rainbow also picked up some dirt after vacuuming a room with the Dyson first.  From my experience the Dyson worked as well as the  Rainbow, I couldn't see a difference in the performance and it is easier to clean.

One big plus for the Rainbow is the water tank.  You can add eucalyptis or some other oil to the water and it makes the house smell nice.  It helps with dog dander.  One downside to the Dyson is emptying the canister; which can be messy, if you are not over a large garbage can.  There is a lot of dust that comes out.  I use (actually my wife uses) the Rainbow in the house for the most part and only occasionally use the Dyson.  For the price difference the Dyson is a better buy.
