Pharaoh, can I ask where you got that picture of Arrow at? I have seen a certain breeder using that picture for their kennel ads.

BHS, you are right there are people out there, but some of them are not going to sell to just anyone. They want their lines to continue the way they have been doing it. They do not want them to get mixed in with the DDR lines of today.

If you go the  frozen route then be sure to call JC at http://www.floridagermanshepherds.com  as he has tons of frozen from an old dog baron that went back to many of that type lines, as well he has some nice DDR liniage.

Elkoor, are you reading this thread.  If so, please jump in.

You know that many of these very fine dogs, the real DDR dogs from before the wall came down.

Many of them were BIG HUNKY DOGS.  They did not adhere to the SV shrunken down standards.

Both Don v Rolandsteich and his son David v Nebelholz were extremely substantial and tall.

The East Germans also had their system of combining temperaments.  Every dog was assigned a six digit code and each number was for certain traits.  They would not likely have ended up with the stunningly beautiful but tragically flawed Boban.

My understanding is that Hitler bred huge black Shepherds as prison guard dogs.  The East Germans kept those dogs and bred them in.  The West Germans started drowning the solid black puppies until they had washed out pigment.  How stupid blaming the dogs.  (the dogs did not vote Hitler into office.)

Twice while walking Shadow (David Nebelholz grandson), I was approached by WWII veterans who were freaking out about how he looked and mentioned that they had not seen a dog like him since they liberated the prison camps.  That was when I did a little research.

Here are some David v Nebelholz pictures:

As an adult he was over 100 lbs and tall (the grandson I had Shadow, was about 28 inches at the withers and a slim 95-105 pounds over is adult years)  The widow of the man  who owned David said that he was huge.

David was very good and easy to live with in the house.  He also had an outdoor kennel.  One day a new employee was told to go in David's kennel and clean it.  He walked in and David got up and walked over and stared hard at him.  No growling, but it scared the guy who was afraid to move and stood against the wall.  David casually walked over, lifted his leg and "marked" him.  David then turned his back on the guy and lay down again.

He had a very calm demeanor but you knew that he was in charge.  To this day there is a beautiful portrait of him in their living room.
