Steve1 says feed by hand. I agree, very good suggestion. I'd use the chance to teach it some simple commands too.

Vaccinations - i just do what my vet tells me because i have no health training at all!

Thats right, feed a new pup by hand every time you feed it just let it eat from the palm of your hand. it then gets your scent, and it will bond with you.

As regards vaccinations over here, the breeder will insist on it, that will be part of the contract,

But in the case of my Pup to come later this month, the breeder is a friend of mine so i do not need any contract, His word is his bond, and for me i know i will get a top class bred Pup

But for the Pups sake i will not even allow it to nose around with my other dog

And to this end i have put in a false metal fence one foot between them to stop any contact until the Pup is vaccinated , Also the Pup will be a little wormy for a while so i do not want that passed over to the older Dog,

Thats the way i think and work with the Dogs,

Perhaps not everyones cup of tea so to speak, but it does me well and i get no problems, then or later on

Thanks for all of the advice you guys.  I'm not certain the pup will live up to his sire, Mambo z Pohranicni Strazes name with me as a fairly new trainer, but I'll take all of the advice I've gotten from this site and use it. I actually have no intentions of allowing him around either of my Huskies....when I get him or later on....They are pretty dominant dogs with new dogs, even puppies. They typically always listen to me, but I wouldn't take any chance on it. I am getting a little mixed up on what is best though for socializing with other dogs....I've seen that they shouldn't be around them until all vaccines are complete.....but what about if I never plan to have them around other dogs period, except possibly the  DDR female German Shepherd pup I plan to get in 2009 when she is a little older and fully vaccinated. Should I still socialize him with other trustworthy dogs? or what? Thanks steve1 I'll definitely be feeding him by hand if that will help the bonding.   I'm just curious though.....he will come to me on a raw diet. I however don't plan to feed him raw, I plan to feed Taste of the Wild, the Salmon variety.  I know my Huskies thrive on it, and health wise they have never looked, and been healthier since I got them.  How can I switch my pup from raw to Taste of the Wild without it upsetting his stomach or doing anything to the pup. I know switching kibbles you can start mixing small amounts of other kibble with the food they have been on....but I thought I read you shouldn't mix raw with kibble. Any advice on that?

Sorry Steve I dont care too much about vacctinanion either :) Never had a problem, obviousely I would not let my dog play with a dog's that I don't know, but I never go obsessive on that rule either :). Even though I belive the vactinantion rule is a smart one, and def worth taking underconcideration.

Snaiper

You would not want to see your Dogs with Distemper, believe me it is sickening to see,

Plus, If the breederwants proof that the Pup is vacccinated, that will be in the terms of the contract, if you do not apply to it then you break that contract and then if anything else goes wrong with the Pup regards the contract then it is null and void,

Once you vaccinate the Pup, what the owner does then in later life is up to them

Goran had his Yearly Two Shots yesterday, He took no notice of it and is the same as before he had them

Regards letting a 8 week old Pup mix with other Dogs other than its own litter mates is in my opinion wrong

It is not fair to the Pup or to other Dogs,

an 8 week old Pup will still carry worms and you know well it has to be treated at intervals for a time to eliminate them

plus if another strange dog mixing with a Pup that age can easily pass something over to the Pup

My Pup will not have any chance of mixing even with our other Dog until it has had its vaccinations, by then i will have wormed her again, as per the usual method, and that is a liquid wormer for a Pup so young

In the meantime she will be fed entirely out of my hand, by the time she is 12 weeks old she will know who feeds her and rely on me alone, during that time my brother will see and stroke her but nothing else, and for the first weeks only i will have the physical contact with her

Steve

the bond will be set for future work with her

That is my way, not to suit everyone thats for sure , but it works for me

You can feed raw with kibble not a problem see here:

http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/mixing-fresh-food-with-kibble/

FWIW I feed raw, never fed by hand, and all the judges from the Continent  and in the UK who have seen us have commented specifically on what a strong bond we have.

Vaccinations are on differing protocols, in differing countries and, it is a personal thing which is down to individual circumstances; I only vaccinate if titre testing demonstrates a need................

steve1, I know not to allow it to mingle with dogs before the vaccinations.......but if I don't plan to let it be around dogs at all with the exception of that DDR female I talked about a couple of years from now.....should I even allow it around dogs at all even after vaccinations?

steve1

Of course you allow it to see and mix with other Dogs after its vaccinations that is a part of the Pups upbringing,

i let it mingle with other Puppies

Not the Full grown G.S Dogs which are working , and the owners of those Dogs would not let it happen anyway

The Father of Goran will not allow humans to touch him

He is perfectly good on the training field but in his own back yard or in his travel box No, steer clear of him, he is a one man dog

Why do i not let a Pup mingle with old Dogs, should one turn on it ,the Pup will not forget and that is something to avoid as it does not need to happen at that  young age

He can play with young Pups and learn a bit that way until later on in its life

Alot of people seem to think that in order for a puppy to contact a disease he has to "play" with other pups or dogs that have it.  That is  far from the truth!  Parvo for instance can live for months and months in the right conditions and your pup can get it from being in that same area or clubhouse.  You can also bring it home on your shoes or clothes.  If disease is what is stopping you from socializing him then you should talk to your Vet about it and get all the facts.

I myself wouldn't let the worry of disease stop me from making a good dog out of my pup.
