Do not make life hard for yourself, Just say to your dog the commands you use in your daily speech in English if you speak that, and of course you do, so make your commands as simple so both you and your Dog understand like SIT is Sit, Down is Down etc or Halt

I command mine in Dutch, because then those around me who speak that language know what i am saying to the Dog

If your commands have too many syllables points will likely be deducted for using a double commands.

No fun learning this stuff the hard way on the trial field... although that's pretty much how I've learned most of it. :-O

What is too many?

Where and when has this happened.

Judges cannot deduct points on guesswork!

If I say "find" instead of "Rivier" is the former better than the latter then?

If I go to KFC I order chicken, If I go to a mexican eat out ,I don't order pizza.   It seems to me if we have a German shepherd from Germany, the Judge would be more impressed with the home lan-go. Fuss Sitz etc.

http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/languag1.htm

is a good site to learn commands.  click on the word and it will give you an audio playback.

look at the french commands.  most of them are 2 or 3 syallable.  i know of a few people who use them and have never lost a point for it.

as far as ordering a rule book or looking them up online, i like having the rule book to carry with me.  especially at training, when you forget something.

You El Funnio, girlio!

Anyway, use whatever language you want.  Judges are not impressed by people who's dogs are trained with German commands because most people use German commands in schutzhund, although they may remember an especially unique way an individual may butcher their native tongue!   I'm going to use French commands on my next dog, specifically because many of the command words have multiple syllables.  Many people, especially those who's dogs compete in both Ring sports and Schutzhund use French commands.

Ha!  John, I didn't see your post - we are saying pretty much the same thing!  Thanks for the link to that site, the audio commands are nifty.  HEY I ordered my rulebook from USA because of the cool binder.  I'm kidding, I just feel like it's a way to support the organization, and it wasn't expensive.

The judge is not impressed by what language you use, he is impressed with results period.

We once had a guy show up at  club wanting to teach his dog commands in Galic(not spelled right i,m sure) his reason was so no one could command his dog to bite him... He did not become a member.
