We have our little guys trained from puppyhood to use the pee pads in their room (yes they DO have their own room LOL) if they can't wait for us to take them out. And they never miss!

tigger is ferocious on the "bite glove"!!! that's priceless! send that one to a schutzhund mag or newsletter or something! the housebreaking thing is tough, even if the little poos and pees are not a big mess, i'm a bit leery of the effect on the other two. my sheps housebroke really easy! and i'd really hate for them to mark over any accidents -gallons and piles! (well, comparatively). have to think hard. thank you so much for posting the pics! and please keep posting updates and any others with their little companions to their big shepherds.
why is it that little dogs have a harder time getting potty trained?

For what it's worth, I've never once had a problem with the GSDs or the cats in the house, having accidents because of the occasional accidents the small dogs have. The other chihuahua was starting to lift his leg in the house and marking - my intact GSD Eagle never started this - got the chi neutered and that stopped 100%. Tigger just has "sometimes" accidents but only when I've fallen asleep in my chair or for whatever reason I don't see her signals to go out.
I think the reason they are difficult to housebreak is A) they are so small - less bladder control B) they are not as trainable in general - bred to be lapdogs, not working dogs and C) they are not as smart as GSDs of course!

is anything as smart as a gsd? since i am home alot, it may not be such a problem. our dogs can go out a doggie door whenever they want (although the first and last potties of the day/night one of us has to take them and wait til they're done). thanks again for the extra info. makes me feel better.

I would just say, plan on the chi being crated, in a small crate, whenever you are not right there to watch it. My chis both NEVER have accidents in their crates. They both make a LOT of noise when they need to go out, when they are in their crate. Other option for when you are out of the house, is bring the chi with you - Tigger and Sonic love to go for car rides - they ride loose in the truck and never have accidents in there. Or, get a puppy pen area in the kitchen or something, and train the chi to use the bathroom in a litter box, papers or pee pads. Easy to clean and good for winter when they don't want to go outside anyway.

i crated trained both shepherds, so that would be the way i go no matter what we end up with. i guess i'd have to get a teeeny little crate tho! a chi could probably get lost in the big crates i have or go thru the bars!

Don't any one kid themselves: I have already had the distinct pleasure of meeting "demure" (?!) little Tigger. That little ball of fire will likely have SchH3 before age 2. HOT, of course! I would suggest she might be Unka Eagle's alter-ego (from a former life?) now available in a convenient micro-package. LMAO!
