Judging by the pictures, the fat boy it seems it does have sme GSd in him, I'd say 33%, with the rest coming from 3 or more other breeds.

On second thought I think zippy283 is right. I'd forgotten that Anatolians also come in brindle. The few we have here are all fawn, but a brindle would be an almost exact match. Here's a link with some photos to provide an examples. (Even the tail shape matches, with no need to resort to a cross.)

Great information--thank you all for these leads... I do think the Anatolian Shepherd is a possibility, and maybe a bit of Catahoula too. We weren't aware of either of these breeds. Of course we love him tons and it doesn't matter what he is, but he's so unusual looking that we've been curious for a long time about his background.
BTW, he's just been to the vet recently and they didn't indicate he was overweight (I think the pictures may be misleading on that point--he sits kind of funny) and from the top view he curves inward at the hips, but I will back his food down a notch just to be sure. He does get a lot of exercise on our farm.
