Kerry

Irrespective of the age, the judge obviously thought the animal was worthy of the placing. Therefore the judge was fully aware that the dogs being presented in the class had an age range.

In my opinion if the judge thought this was the best placing for that particular animal, his attributes obviously outweighed animals several months older/younger than the placing.

However if handlers are trying to deceive judges then maybe at future shows the date of birth is given direct to the judge by the steward/interpreter, but I am not sure it will stop handlers trying to influence judges on individual inspection, where more blatantly the handler tries to influence the judge with either recent placings or breeder/breeding.

In respect of UK Breed Wardens, the breed should nominate five championship show judges and all GSD breed clubs should help pay for these individuals to be assessed and passed as a breed warden from a WUSV official. This would give more credence to our Breed Surveys and be accepted as an official assessment by the WUSV/FCI.

We should also be putting in practise a training program for the up and coming, again in my opinion we should be more like the continent and all enthusiast showing or breeding should be giving back to the breed by helping at show events, seminars and breed surveys - it is very easy to take from the breed and I also include the professional handlers here, if the tax man is prepared to take 17.5% of their earnings, then just maybe 17.5% of their time could be dedicated back to the breed.

The GSD is at an all time low and it is now time all enthusiasts pulled together with a positive rather than a negative approach, with the welfare issue looming within the general public and the Kennel Club we as a breed need to be more proactive - In my opinion no litter should be registered by The Kennel Club unless a certain criteria is met by the sire and dam. This should include both parents being hip x-rayed with a mean score below 25, elbows, haemophilia and eye tested prior to the Kennel Club registering offspring’s.

Please give constructive comments on the above, they are only one persons opinion. Together we can instruct the Breed Council and the BAGSD (+ other organisations not affiliated to the Breed Council) to act on our behalf and lead the way to unite this breed on both welfare and health.
