IMO, nature must be best mentality is not always valid.

Nature is very harsh; a few wild wolves dyng of acute bacterial infection here and  there is not the main thrust of most scientists' survey or study. Yes, I believe a few wild wolves do die of acute bacterial infection in the digestive tract. Many vets say a few dogs on raw diet do so and I believe them.

It is possible that before the advent of medicine, most people could eat raw food. The few who could not had been kept to a very low number. Most of the suscetable died as children before reproductive age. This contiunal premature deaths had kept the suscitable population quite low, but a number of children, unfortunate product sof genetic diversity, had to die continuously for this condition to continue.

"Henry’s suggestion of proportions of the components sounds excellent too. I personally like to add more organ meat though, and definitely make sure they get all that chicken fat from necks and backs."

Yeah, I usually give 15% Chicken Liver but I many people only use 10% as too much chicken liver can cause problems so I just gave a conservative recommendation.

"You can’t really go wrong with it – not every meal of your dog has to be balanced."

Exactly, Raw feeding is about balance over time.

I also give raw whole eggs two or three times a week, it is very nutritional for the dogs.

Another important thing when feeding Raw is variety, you can give beef as the muscle meat for two weeks then lamb the next few weeks.

Good Luck

kikikatie, where are you located?

i feed raw, it's the best thing you can do for your dog.  but please be careful if you're buying meat from the supermarket.  you have to make sure the meat is antibiotic, hormone, steroid, etc. free.  it should be all natural (organic if you can get it).  for example, if the cow or lamb was given an antibiotic, and the antibiotic was still in the bloodstream at the time of slaughter, it could have an effect on your dog.  it doesn't effect us because we cook our meat, which kills the antibiotic, etc. there are some companies that have a sticker on the packaging that says no antibiotics given 3 months prior to slaughter.

it takes a little while to figure things out when you're starting, but once you get it, it's smooth sailing.

feel free to pm me if you need help

HI kikikatie!!!

Nice to see you on here!!!

She lives in the Sacramento area, and there is allot available. Its just a matter of finding the right butcher, but I get my chicken 1/4 at Wal Mart, really cheap, I get everything else at the Orangevale Meat Butcher. ie: Buffalo, Ostrich, beef bones knuckles, and a good WHOLE mix  with veggies and organs, and neck bone.

Thank you for saying such nice things about me, and Ruger. I just love your girl, she is sooo sweet and a GREAT family dog. I was happy to puppy sit over night. ANYTIME!!

Hey! I had no idea that you were on this website. Funny.. small world... We would have called & asked you more info. but we figured you alreday had Kozette overnight, why bug you more? LoL. Thanks so much for keeping her over night! She is usaly not too comfortable with being apart from one of us, & we only usaly leave her behind If we must, & she of course lets us know how unhappy with us she is after. But when we came back & got her, she didn't act like her normal, "you left me behind how dare you" self..LoL. We both even said to eachother in the car, did you notice how happy & comfortable  Kozette was when we picked her up?

Anyways, I'm sure it's so simple, I must seem so dumb. LoL. But hey after 5 years of being told no this this & that by a million people who say she is fine, your just spoiling her, dogs aren't picky, give her her dog food & leave my office, LoL, you begin to just settle. So when anything new to us like this comes along, it's something totally against what we were always taught, so it kind of throws you for a loop. LoL. She has been like this since I could remember, & she's our baby, what can I say, so we just want to do what's best for her. So I'm going to ask alot of dumb questions & stuff untill I find what suits her best. :) Thank you for the info! & for even getting us started with this... I heard about it before, we always try to do whats best, & it seemed really interesting. So When you said something about it, it was kind of reliving to see such a great pup doing great on it, & I know you guys care alot about him, & try to do great by him, which made it even more convincing! :)

Can't wait to get them together to play again, She needs more doggie friends. She's too much of a human! :) She really enjoyes her time with you all! Thank you so much!

Talk soon-

You guys can call and ask anytime, and I will give you the best information I can. However I am no expert compared to the people who frequent this board. These people here are the best of the best and I have learned allot from all of them. You guys can come down any weekend you like to watch us train. Just give me a call and I will let you know where we are.

Good luck with her food, she is great.

Thank you to everyone! I love places like this, where I can get real advise from real people.... Sorry if this seemed like a dumb question, It's just foreign language to me, but I'm learning! :) & I guess it did seem kind of dumb to list her coloring, like that makes a difference, but I'm new to his whole posting/forum thing too, & the couple of places I checked out I saw people introducing their dogs like that, but she does have a name, & instead of using her color, I should have used her name at first...  But just know that I really do love Kozette, & she IS my baby..  I guess I should make it a bit more apparent next time...( Poor Kozette... )

Thanks for puting up with a newbie.... :)

Many people said that dogs can die from bacterial infections...we'll come to think of it, i have never heard of a dog dying from bacterial infection because of eating raw meat.  Kibble is more dangerous. Hundreds of dogs died and that is why a lot of kibble making brands were re-called! I have heard of a dog dying because he chocked on a chicken bone because he didnt chew it and swallowed it. I have also heard of a dog choking to death because he ate his kibbles too quickly(gulping and inhaling)! So come to think of it kibble is more dangerous! Atleast on raw, your dog wont be suffering from allergies, obesity and gum diseases! Wolfs die quicker than dogs because they are not protected from predators, parasites, storms, forest fires, poachers...
