Catch the mother cat , take her to the animal shelter.  They usually fix animals for free or very cheap.  Have them fix her and return her. They'll never know most likely and you won't have to worry anymore or search for the babies at all hours of the day.  :o)  Plus your husband won't be tempted to leave his DNA all over the crime scene. :o)

I rescued an old female Golden Retriever with bad hips, one hundred pounds overweight, and tear ducts that do not work (which brought on infection and require artificial tears several times a day for the rest of her life) from a young couple that also had three adult cats.  I took the dog and did not know that one week later, the female from this couple took all of the cats, including two litters of two week old kittens, to a "field" and dumped them.  This was in September.  She said that they would have plenty to eat there, because she knows surely there are mice and birds around there.  I commented that coyote, dogs, opossums and coons will probably kill the kittens, or they will freeze and starve when winter gets here, and her response was "Oh well", I didn't kill them.  It would just be nature taking its course.  She said she couldn't remember which field she dumped them in when I asked.  She said she just took a long drive and saw a field that looked good enough.

I just found out last week that she has another cat and a chihuahua.

She comes to my home once a week to play poker and not once has she went into the downstairs recreation room where we keep her former dog, to say hi or pet the dog (her name is Prescious).  My wife hates this girl, but her mother is a friend of ours and is ashamed of her.

I just don't know about some people.

My ex-sister-in-law had a beautiful mixed breed large dog.  Sweetest temperment one could ask for.  My ex-sister-in-law never got the dog spayed, thought the fence would keep males away (did I mention she is an idiot?).  From here on out I will refer to her as idiot. The dog became pregnant and as she was delivering, idiot's hubby told me, days later, that idiot (who was 9 months pg herself) took the puppies as they were born, put them into a sack with a cinder block and you can guess from there.  Later this wonderful dog got mastitis and was in agony, idiot was nursing at the time. I asked if she was going to do anything for the poor dog, you'll love this "no, that will teach her to not get pregnant in the future, she will think twice next time".  Needless to say, the dog ended up with a new home (as did the other 3 dogs she brought home at various times).  Idiot never could figure out how the dogs got out.  As for animal control, well in farm country back then, a dog is like a piece of furniture, no such thing as cruelty. I'm glad things have changed just sorry people haven't
