carrots do enrich pigment IMO, with our last liter we gave raw carrot to all the pups and the color was definitely more red
i stopped giving carrots to the bitch pup and continued with the male and his color stayed a rich red and the bitch went a paler color don't know how or why but it definitely made a difference... as for tomatoes think there might be a bit of a smelly mess lol
with carrots
without carrots lol

I have a Zamp daughter - very red pigment, no carrots, etc. Just genetics. Here is a picture - Felice vom Amulree

What else can you expect from a superiour dog like ZAMP and Amulree breeding, being Scottish of course!!!! liz.

I have many dogs who are very red from genetics, not crap supplements, or anything else, including carrots. Personally, I think it is silly to try to enhance the natural coat color of any GSD and, in my opinion, borders on unethical. Why do it? The dog coat is what it is. It is only one part of the overall picture of the dog, including structure. Temperament and working ability should be coming first.
At least one breeder in the past was caught painting a dog with dye to hide white on paws. So yes, people have been known to cheat, but now I believe there are some tests being performed to catch the cheaters. A good dog is a good dog is a good dog if it meets the standards. Trying to "enhance" something that is not there is ridiculous.

Have to agree it should be the last consideration,it is sad ,if true, that people are colouring thier dogs artificially, soooooo wrong!!!!! liz
