BRADY BEE

by BRADY BEE on 07 October 2008 - 06:10

Although I agree that Burns is a very good food, I have used it in the past and found it quite hard to keep weight on very active dogs. But every dog is different of course. If it were me, I wouldn't be worming every month, I would cut out the Chappie and just increase the amount of Burns, or find a food higher in protein and fat.

Tigermouse,Burns is one of the better foods on the market, and is very good for dogs with "allergies". They have a good help line, but normally do not reccomend mixing anything with thier food,no titbits, treats,or canned food, just "Burns". Having used it myself on both gsd's and cockers i found my dogs were always "lean",could never get wieght on using burns. My cockers were continually "hungry" on it,but that's not unusual as they are greedy gits.I would have to agree about higher protien and fat, kinda difficult to say which one would be best as dogs are all different. In the past i have used raw chicken carcases, and like Linda B has said tripe, always found both good for getting the wieght on.If your dog is very active remember, input has to equal output. I would not be worming on such a regular basis either. liz

Hi Tigermouse, Burns have just brought out a new food with maize instead of rice, I haven't tried it yet but I've bought a sack.  Mine have been on Burns for a couple of years or so and "do" very well on it but I don't work my dogs!

I've had a Shepherd that I couldn't get any weight on untill he was about 3.5 years old, I guess he just needed to mature but I worried myself sick about him... trying different things etc, so I sympathise.

Why do you worm every month?  I've never known anyone worm every month and it won't be good for any dog... has your Vet recommended this?

Hallo

I think that you should not feed him whit extra , like yougurt and stuff . the food suppose to be like it is , it became too much minerals of this and thatthe stommack can not take care of all you put in  ,if you hvae to put in a lot , change the food

i use eukanuba for my dogs and i dont put anything

good luck

I think Burns do a "working dog food" too,not sure though. At the moment i feed Wafcol salmon and potatoe,no complaints whatsoever, even the 2 cockers are happy and healthy. It's a bit of a mine field when it comes to choosing a dog food,i sometimes hanker for the good old days when everybody used tripe and then added vitamin supplements,ie Stress,Canoval,SA 37. Ido not remember having any problems with that diet, except when my vet said "if your going to feed that to your puppies i'd rather you boiled it first". Wanting to do the right thing i did boil it,in a pot in my kitchen,ONCE,AND NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!  YUK.  liz

I have never used it before but isn't the proten level (18%) very low?

Tigermouse- maybe that particular dog food just doesn't suit him? You can refer to this website to find another kibble: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

Hope this helps!

Liz, I think if I had the time etc, I would try a more natural diet... raw meats, tripes etc.  I can remember being sent to the butchers when I was a kid to get two sheep heads for a tanner... LOL.  My mum cooked them, stripped them, (an amazing amount of meat is on a head) including the brains and that, with biscuit was our Boxers dins for the next 2 - 3 nights!  I wouldn't want to do that!

We also bought direct from the local abattoir, I don't even know if you can do that now... progress!!!

Once you find a good supply it is not really that time-consuming to prepare. You just need a lot of space in you fridge!

Yes,the local abattoir use to be the meeting place for all the breeders every Friday, buying thier tripe. But your right,i think even that was taken over by a local pet food company, and is now sold minced, frozen and sold by the pound. Iknow i said i hankered for those days, but i never had to prepare the damn stuff, that was hubby's job.If it had been down to me i'm not so sure, i couldn't do it now life is much easier putting a scoop in a bag, thank god!!!!!!
