AgarPhranicniStraze1

by AgarPhranicniStraze1 on 03 October 2008 - 13:10

About 7 years ago I had adopted a 6 yr old golden retreiver from a family that was being transferred out of state and could not take the dog (so they told me). The dog was beautiful, sweetest dog I ever had and she was well trained. I was so happy with her and felt she was perfect for the kids.  2 weeks after I had her home I woke up one morning to the dog laying in a pool of blood.  She literally looked like someone sabbed her and she was very listless.  I immediately took her to the ER, not having any idea what could possibly have happend and she was diagnosed with Pyrometria.  The only thing to save her life was to do the surgery and spay her.  Back then it cost me $800 and the vet said had I not brought her in when I did she would have been dead within the hour from all the blood loss.  She recovered well after the surgery.

Her situation was likely more severe than the situations above and being I got the dog as an older dog I was never told by the previous owners if she'd had previous "woman problems" in the past.  Some of my friends theorized that perhaps the family new the dog had this illness and couldn't afford to have it treated so they passed her off as not being able to take her on their relocation???  I regarded it as just a fluke that this happend 2 weeks after I got her because the family was crying when I picked her up to take her home and she looked to have been taken very well care of.  But who knows???  I'd spay her as the others suggested.  If you weren't planning to breed then it's better to just do it and not have to worry about it again.
