That's one freaky bug!  we sure don't get those here in New England.  It turns into a moth & is harmless despite its appearance. They act as an "indicator species of environmental health and natural diversity".  See more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hickory_Horned_Devil

OMG those things are HUGE!!!  Creep me out just looking at the picture.

I think it looks adorable.  Why do you think it look creepy?  He's a brave little six inch caterpillar if he is threating you, Yellowrose, as you are a thousand times his size, LOL.  He has civil drive!!  If he would stay like that, we could teach him to sit, jump the wall and retrieve a tiny dumbell.  I can see it now.  Veronica

Yeah Right Veronica, like the Bears and the Elk on your front yard..lol

Wonder if I could take it on the airplane to Florida..Turn it loose in the endangered Wildlife park in Tampa.????

I can just see me in the office of Security, as they go thru my belongings and find it and keep me impounded for three days and nights while they determine if I am going to Blow up an airplane with it...I will write on the jar...AThis is a Horney Devil...no harm intended...leave alone...dangerous to humans.....will explode if you remove from jar..Think that will get me thru the security at the airport?????  Yes, I am going to turn it loose...I have sweet gum trees by the bucket loads and lots of Hickory Trees also..so out to its abode it will go...I sure have an interesting life here in the Piney Woods of Texas...No snakes this week...  I had a tomatoe catapillar last month..they are fuzzy and green and very large also..but not this scary..This joker is like leather when you touch it.......bye bye Scarrie..his new name...

Hey Veronica    your pup looks like my pup?????

Goodness, I would've been terrified! You were quite brave YellowRose, I can't say I wouldn't have killed it if I found it in the pen with one of my babies...Sorry, over-protective mom. Like others have said, nothing nearly that exciting where I am, at first I thought this post was a joke too, but yeah, that thing is pretty darn scary.

I'd be afraid to stomp it, because it looks like it'd rear up and take a toe off!

Congrats for not sqealing like a frigtened child, as others (myself included) might do!

But LillyBug... your name is so fitting.  Rear up and take a toe off... bless... you're worse than me!  LOL!!!

That thing is gross. If I found that I think they would've heard me yelling WTF from 3 blocks over.

by AKVeronica60 on 27 September 2008 - 00:09

Awww...all of you picking on an infant moth...shame on you.  I still think he's a cute caterpillar.  What's there to scream about?  I'd put a harness on him and take him with me to Pet Zoo, where I'm going in a few minutes to get Oskar's crate to Illinois.

Jan, our pups look alike because they are both Zidane daughters.  My avatar is of Worthy's Fenja when she was just five weeks old...already fetching the tiny little tug at that age, God Bless her little working dog heart.

We get those around here sometimes. A few years back, I was outside with my kids collecting bugs to feed to the chickens so they could play "Chicken Football" (country folk entertainment LOL). Anyway my son showed up with one of those to throw in the bucket. My daughter was about 3 and saw it and shrieked and ran away. We cracked up since it was in a bucket and knew it couldn't get to her. We went back to what we were doing, but she couldn't resist the horrifying creature in the bucket. So she would toddle back over, look down in the bucket, shriek at the top of her lungs and run away, and then repeat  all over again every few minutes. The funniest part was that she was genuinely scared every single time LOL.
