As a former renter, I'd check with her landlord, and also go with your gut on how dedicated this person is.

I rented my first house, got my female GSD (she was allowed), then the landlord decided she had to go outside (even though she's wonderful in the house, he just didn't like a 75 lbs dog inside) so I moved.

Next house I had a crazy landlord who constantly changed her mind.  Had a small yard and I told the landlord up front I planned to add another dog.  When I seriously started looking for another dog, she told me that the new one would have to stay outside after she'd originally said a new dog would have to stay inside.  Then she called me and said no new dog.  Then she called me and said Heidi needed to be crated anytime I wasn't home (Heidi goes everywhere but the grocery store with me, is wonderful in the house, and I refuse to crate her unless it's an emergency).  Hmm...  I decided no more landlords.

I already owned 5 acres, and it's surround by well over 100 acres that my retired uncles live on and don't use.  So I knew if I moved there my dog would have access to more land than we could use.  I bought a doublewide manufactured home outright the week the landlord went psycho on me about my dog.  We now live in a home on property we own completely.  I got my new dog.  Happily ever after.  I'm planning to build a house here when/if the ecomony gets better and after I recover from the inital expenses of getting everything set up (we're broke, but happy).  I also plan to add another dog in the future.  Point being, if the person is dedicated enough and will go to any length for their dogs, they will find a way to make things work.  When I was getting this place set up my last landlord (the crazy one) begged me to come back and a friend of mine who knows Heidi begged me to rent from him and keep her inside and was okay with adding another dog, I just wanted security for my dogs so ownership was right for us.  I think it all depends on the person.  Just my experience.

Good luck,

Nichole

I was a renter when I first got GSDs--and there was no good reason for me to buy at that stage in my life.

I think you need to meet the person and to make sure they are committed to the demands of renting with dogs--and what may be required of them to find a new home for themselves and their dogs if they move.

I agree with Christine.  Just because they are renting doesn't mean the pup wouldn't have the best home possible.  I would sell her a pup, from what she sounds like.  If you don't sell her a pup, send her to me!

What is this?

Part one or part two of the story, or as Paul Harvey used to say, The rest of the story.

Tru..... you can sell pup's to whomever you choose.   But I don't think your being fair about it.

Just on the basis of rent or own........ no that's not fair at all.

Anyway....  what is?

Moon's.

What would you think the percentage of landlords who allow at least one big dog on the property?

If a renter has to move what are the chances of finding another landlord who allows a big dog?

Don't say this is not an important factor.

I think the length of time of residency and job is also very important.

Hah! I can take you puny armed Christine.  Let me know where we can meet for our combat.... in Anchorage....that has great beer and pizza.....the Moosestooth is a great place for that.  Are you buying?  Veronica

I applaud you for being so thorough but there are exceptions to every rule.  Many years ago when I got my first GSD I was single and renting an APARTMENT, yet owned and titled a wonderful, working line DDR GSD.   Owning a home can be tough when you are single especially when you aren't willing to conpromise spending on your dogs!  She sounds like a great owner AND she is willing to do the work to prove it to you.

thank god the breeder took a chance on me.....
