My dogs are all microchipped as well as their collar/tags, but living in the country as I do, many "country people" around me see a stray dog with no collar and don't even try to help it out, even though it may be microchipped, whereas if they see one with a collar/tags hanging on them they know right away it belongs to someone and will try to catch it and attempt to contact owner listed on the tags, I know this for a fact because I've seen/heard it happen personally many, many times where I live. Sorta like the old saying "out of sight, out of mind",  they can't see a m/c!

I never put our dogs collars on them unless we are leaving the house for a walk or class.  I did at one point until mine got tangles up and it took everything that I had to free them.  Never again.

So sorry for your loss, your family must feel horrible. I also do not use collars, micro chip.

I feel for all of you who have had "tragic" events.  My best friend had a new dog she was socializing for K9 and he managed to get his lower jaw caught inbetween the wires in a wire kennel.  He was strong enough to bend the wires we later found out after looking at all the kennels.  It was a standard kennel for a dog of his size.  If we hadn't been right there (she always kennels her dogs without collars when leaving the home), it would have been terrible.  We also had another dog that had behavioral issues and that is an understatement, very unpredictably aggressive, the lady who brought him in for behavioral rehab is an experienced dog owner.  I finally got the whole story out of her when she admitted her daughter put the dog in the crate with the collar on and she came home to an unconscious dog with the collar caught in the wires. He was eventually euthanized when every avenue including drugs was exhausted.

Sadly, I have heard of this several times. A friend lost a 5 month old Rottie while playing with a visiting littermate.

I am so very sorry for you and your pup.......

This happened to Joss and Missie T when they were younger- luckily I was home.  I had choke collars on them- since then, I only use a collar that can be cut off- I use the nylon humane choke collars, ever since then.... Scared the beejeebies out of me. I was just lucky that I was able to get Missie T's jaw out of Joss's collar!!!

Sorry, but to me anyone leaving dogs together unsupervised is MAD leaving collars of ANY type on them.

That is terrible!!!  When my dog is not in my sight he does not have a collar on and thats only in his run and crate.  My previous dog got caught on his brothers collar but we got it off immediately, thank god he didnt freak out.  Did the fiance even try to cut the collar off?  or was she scared because they were snapping?  I dont care how mangled my hand gets if my dog is going to strangle to death I will do EVERYTHING in my power to make sure that doesnt happen.  Poor dog.

This happened to my cousins dogs. The collar of the GSD got caught on the Rotts jaw.  Asha, the GSD, was being drug around by him when they finally found the neighbor to cut off the fursaver.  Asha, was lifeless but finally took a deep breath and is alive today.  I'll never let two dogs play with collars on. I am so sorry for this loss.  It's very tragic.  My condolances to the family who lost a beloved member of the family.

I too know this well, it's happened here with two of mine.  I was there to free them up.

Good point to consider for all.
