Never mind the distance question,  it was already in the first description.  I was just focussing on the step before that and missed it completely!

I haven't trained a send-out before, I love reading and learning about all the different methods and styles of training it though.  Not sure which one we'll use, but I want to make sure I understand them before I decide!

Thanks.

I start with about 25 paces, which leaves 10-12 paces for the "build up" but still leaves the target visible to the dog.

Thank you, SS, for a very clear explanation.

By the way, AKC for the UD title, you only have to do a 25 FOOT go-out in a silly little ring, so the motivation is less important than the control and focus (you need your dog to keep going until the command to turn and SIT).  They need to be centered not for direct scoring, but because they have to jump one of two jumps based on a hand command.  If the dog has veered, he is much more likely to jump the wrong (disqualifying) jump.  Too much motivation and your dog may jump the ring fence and then it's chaos.

Nonetheless, I realize after all these years that Shelley's method is better than any I have ever seen in an obedience club.
