the only way I would cull is if there was an obviously serious defect. then it's only the kind thing to do.

The thing that gets me is when a breeder knowingly breeds 2 dysplastic dogs just to get "to die for grips and drive".... holds the litter until 6 months old.... exrays and puts down any with bad hips. TRUE STORY!!  It REALLY got my ruff up big time!! How could anyone be so stupid! Even if the pups that were kept had ok hips... they are still going to produce bad hips down the road!!!!  OH yes, but ANYTHING to get those grips and off the wall drives!!  I just can't stand some breeder's way of thinking.

I would not cull an albino who is otherwise healthy, I'd probably give him away without papers.  Veronica

Veronica,

How would you prevent that dog from later being bred(IE, White Doberman Fad)?  Would you do an early spay/neuter(IE, 8-12 weeks), prior to allowing the dog to leave your property?

This one is a hard one for me...  I used to try to save every pup but I too ended up with pups with heart murmurs.  I trust my bitches and give humane relief to those that are suffering.  It breaks my heart.  But it's the right thing to do.

1.Never Culled 2. Never Culled 3. Maybe 4. Serious Defect and I likely would.

Have had two litters where the Dam rejected a pup and we nursed both.

On the first litter the pup died a few days later.

On the second litter she refused a pup and we nursed. The pup lived but had a undershot jaw. We had to have dental work done and the pup grew up and other than that was an awesome GSD.

I have read about breeders that culled and always thought it would be no problem but for me it was tough to just let a pup die or put down.  But the dam somehow knew which pups were "inferior" and rejected them.

this thought popped in my head when reading this thread -- is it possible that maybe some of the times when bitches kill their pups they might being doing the same thing - culling? maybe there's something wrong with the pup(s) perhaps they are able to smell something when they are cleaning them and it triggers them to kill? i'm certain this isn't always the case just wondering if some of the time it might be.

My bitch did not kill them but would not let them nurse and would either knock them away with her nose and sometimes carried them off and left them. On the second litter pup she would mouth him hard and knock him away as we tried to get her to nurse him.

I would agree with everyone to cull if a puppy has a defect. But I try to save any puppy that is weak or doesn't get to eat enough.  I once had a female pup that way, and she was always half or more times smaller than her siblings.  She was also very ugly.   But at about at 3 months old she was such a beautiful puppy, eveyone wanted to buy her!  She was a longcoat, and ended up being a Search and Rescue dog.   Just one of my experiences.......

TKT,

I am sure she turned out awesome....but if she hadn't been around, I am sure that another pup would have turned out to be just as awesome?

This whole thought process is hard for some to wrap their minds around----and I get that.  It was for me too!~

#5 Yes,  for the most part,  there are alway's exception's.

I would keep an Albino, such animal's are special to me.
