thanks everyone

I live in Buxton, Maine and have been looking for almost one year right now. I have contacted a lot of breeders, but they all seem to breed A LOT of litters.......... I really want a dog that has parents that have great scenting abilities, or the breeder to be able to help me get a pup who shows a  lot of interest in his "nose"

I did go see a guy in Maine who appeared to have what I wanted, however he told me that I was not what he was looking for in a dog owner ??? Not sure what that really meant as he was not into explaining. He imports his dogs from Germany, pups too and he also had two adults at his house, I really liked his dogs, they seemed to have the right temprement for what I am looking for, we beautiful to look at, (red and black) good size and correct form. Priced at 2800....... ouch that would have killed my pocketbook I am sure...........

I am a full time Paramedic/ Firefighter, been married to my high school sweetheart for 22 years, we have five children aged 13, 14, 15, 16, and 19, and my husband is getting deployed for 12-18 months in January to Afghanistan..

we own our own home in the country, have great vet references and love animals, have trained dogs in the past,  and we do not have any interest in breeding GSD as I don't have the expertise for it.... I have a lab and I feed him wellness dog food.................

\

need anything else to point me in the right direction ?

Thanks and I will keep asking questions as long as no one minds, and knowing me even if they do I probably will keep it up.....

Don't get discouraged just because of one breeder. Some breeders are really close minded, and some just got burned before by irresponsible buyer.  2,800.00 seems a lot. Like I said I really love working line, I used to prefer show line, but that’s only because I never owned a working line before my last pup. Now I am not going back, working line for me is a total package, for very reasonable price. I am not into showing my dogs so why pay extra? Plus I learned that once I get my dog I don't care how he looks any more, she becomes my partner, and I wouldn't care if she would be bootie ugly :). But every time I get a new one I am considering the looks as well, but just through time I learned that looks are not important, is what you get underneath that really matters.

That breeder might not like the idea of so many children in the house :).

Good luck.

I am not discouraged, I really want a dog that is going to be a good fit for our active family as well as be able to do what I want him to do. health and temprement are the two most important items on the agenda, the sex of the dog as well as the looks are all up for debate....  as well as the price. I dont mind traveleing to see the breeder and facility ot to be interviewed, as I have LOTS of questions I ask as well. This past year has been a  lot of research and listening for me, and I still don't know beans, or so it seems at times

 Thanks

Hi Cindy,

I applaud you taking time to research into the breed and also the breeder.  Considering that most pedigree dogs have been split into two strains – the working lines and the conformation lines, I would recommend you to research into both.  Visiting some of the working trail clubs and talking to the members about their dogs and their achievements can give you a better understanding for what you are looking for.

As long as you can be realistic about what you want from the dog, you can find both qualities in a dog.

Cindy

I would highly recommend Pia Blackwell at  www.vomrheinland.com.  She is a member of this forum and really well respected.  She lives in Massachusetts just south of Boston.  Pia is orginally from Germany and breeds just the highest quality dogs. I'm almost positive she will be able to help you.

I was up in your neck of the woods not long ago I live in New Hampshire. I was on Rt 35 going thru Hollis as I was going along the road I seen a parked police cruiser and a policer officer throwing a ball for his K-9.  The GSD would run like crazy after the ball bring it back then sit and wait for the officer to throw the ball again.   It was a lot of fun to watch the interaction between the GSD K-9 and the officer.

A good friend of mine spent 2 years looking for her pup so don't worry too much your doing the right thing by waiting .    You have come to the right place for advice.  This site is a tremendous resource for any one looking for a GSD.

Hey Cindy,

I would highly recomend Pia also.  Not that I'm biased :))  I got my female from her and she's also a friend.  But...........Pia is brutally honest.  :)  and will do her best to match you up to a dog.   Her puppies are socialized like none you've ever seen before..........born in the kitchen with grand kids, little dogs, a cat and also a tortoise crawling around.  Their very social, yet will go out and do any job you ask of them.  We have 7 of her offspring in our schutzhund club and they're all great dogs.

Good luck with your search!

Donna

I would also reccomend Shelly Strohl and/or Molly Graf. Molly is famous for breeder support, she has "Homecoming parties" for her puppy families and a private e-list as well. Shelly has been a working line breeder for some time and I think has recently begun with WGSL dogs. Either would be an excellent resource for you. I believe that Shelly is a former Breed Warden and I know that Molly is one right now, both have years of competition and training behind them. Both also post here so they are easy to get ahold of! Good luck! Lorri
