Rocky mud,

Those prices actually sound like their from Kolenda kennels and yes they are very high priced. I also live in Michigan and have personally been over to Kolenda kennels. They have been mentioned on here before.  I also agree there are a lot of BYB's in Michigan but I feel they are truly all over this country of ours. You just have to cross you"T's" and dot your "I's" when you are ready to search for your forever family member. There are a number of reason's people choose their price's some you can justify and some you can't, but it is their business and they do get to price their pups the way they see fit. Whether they are doing it for the all mighty $$$ or for the breed, unfortunetly there is nothing we can do to change this except complain about it. Do I agree to over price dog's? NO to me there is no reason to do this.

KG-

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize it until you had said something. Thanks again.

Kelly-
It seems to me that there is more talk on this board about BYB's in Michigan. Its just an opinion though. Sadly there are tons all over the world and like you said we cannot really do much about it except complain.

Thanks everyone,
Rocky Mud

There are plenty of cons in the buisness. Just use your best judgement.

Two Moons you are 100% right as P.T. Barnum said there is a sucker born every second. These prices on a lot of GSD'S are completely out of control.

That verbiage sounds exactly like Fleischerheim... my GSD is a daughter of a Fleischerheim stud and she is a beautiful girl and built very solid & sound. I purchased her at 1yr 2months as the 3rd owner from a breeder who paid $1000 for her.

Personally, I cannot afford their pricing but even if i could, i'm not sure i would... that's a LOT of money for an unproven pup. Now if you're a gambler at heart then hey that might be right up your alley :o)

I'm not badmouthing the kennel by any means, i've seen the lines and photos of their dogs and they look gorgeous- they really do. And if a kennel is big enough and well-known enough for exporting great quality dogs all over the world, well then they probably can charge that kind of money and they'll find people who will pay it.

While we are on the subject of puppy pricing... i could use some advice :o)

My GSD "Rounder" is scheduled to be bred this coming heat, i've selected the breeder and am interested in 2 studs there. She is a black & tan female, all German Schutzhund on her top side including multiple SGR & VA titles, and german & canadian on her bottom side- back a couple generations, SCH titles. Her saddle is slightly washed out (her parents both had strong coloring) and she's a very large female, carrying a lot of her size in her legs, and has a big west german head. She is high drive and extremely willing to please. Her hips have been x-rayed and i am still awaiting the results, however both the breeder and vet were very impressed with the x-rays and expect to come back OFA good, possibly excellent (i dont have my hopes up on an excellent rating as they are very rarely handed out).  I havent started her in any Schutzund but i would like to (she is only 3). Even for a shepherd she's a bit on the over-protective side favoring women and directing her aggression towards men specifically- i have made HUGE progress with her since i first bought her (i found out 6mos after i bought her that there was a "situation" with the previous owner concerning her daughters- unfortunately she was unaware of this until then.). Now when she is accompanying a man anywhere (my brother) she is just fine and doesn't feel the need to watch and protect him like she does with me, my mother, or my niece. ...a little background on her.

One is of Czech DDR background with many champions behind him- he was bred out of Cimmerian kennels. He is a dark sable male of good size (large enough to breed her but not BIG) but more correct in the legs, and with a smaller Czech head. He is a high drive working dog, hips OFA Good. I like his look & structure and the pedigree behind him. My concern is the pups' coloring and temperment as he is a more aggressive male.

The other is primarily American and Canadian lines, also with many champions behind him on the top side, with some German and Norway lines on the bottom side of his pedigree- bred by the same kennel i've chosen. He is a black & tan with good solid color and much more black on him. He has a large, well proportioned body, maybe slightly short in the legs however, he has a nice big head like she does and a very refined "noble" look to his face. He's not yet had his hips x-rayed, his sire/dam were OFA Fair (one may have been good) He is probably medium drive and is extremely social and laid back- he should throw very good coloring at the pups as well as lend a good temperment. My concerns are his hips & pedigree being not quite on par with hers.

I am leaning toward the Czech male but haven't completely made up my mind yet, I also am still not decided on pricing on the pups. The pups will come with AKC registration & microchips, a puppy contract/guarantee of health, and an owner's contract will be required to be signed (i.e:if any neglect or association with a puppy mill
