I have trimmed my own dogs nails for over 15 years and just watch them and trim as needed which can vary from dog to dog. If they every get overly long I will cut the tips off and then do it again it a couple of weeks until I get them back where I want them.

I also cut my dogs nails. I do it by myself and never any trouble. I start all the pups out that I have raised at two weeks old, and I do them weekly until they leave to go to their new home at which time I explain to the new family how to do it and if they continue to do it every week or two until the pup is 5-6 months old, they will not have a problem later down the road. Done weekly you do not have to take more than the tip off, but this allows it to become habit to the pup and the new family.
I have a male and female that I purchased that were not started at an early age, and I find it easiest to do in the tub while they are side tracked about getting a bath. I usually only do one foot or two at a time depending on how they are adjusting to it. Both of them now can be done anytime I want and now are becoming shorter quicked as I am able to keep the length down.
I have used a dremel before, but usually just use a quality large dog nail tool.

One thing to remember regarding road work and nails: If your dog is not "up" on his feet, if the dog has more of a "hare" foot or splayed toes, working on pavement won't be enough to keep the nails short. I use a dremel or nail clippers, depending on my mood.

I have an old boy's who's nails are so hard I just dont have the strength to cut them with clippers. I have purchased a batter Pet Dremel and I find its fab as you can wear down a bit at a time and if you get close to the quick he starts to flinch before you actually catch one.
Several of my other dogs never need their nails cutting but one has always walked on her heels and I've had to do her nails every couple of weeks just to keep her feet neat.

I've used a regular Dremel for years! My boy just lays on the floor and usually falls asleep while I trim.
Don't get the wrong idea about him, though. He is a high drive, great tracking & bitework. I just started using the dremel when he was very young and gained his trust. It just takes a little time but it is soooo worth it! With black nails you just can't see the "quick" when using trimmers, so the dremel is a much better tool for trimming!
