If you would have asked me that question about 2 years ago, I would have answered a showline dog. But now I have had workingline dogs as well, and I found out that some of my showlines are more hyper and drivey than the workinglines. It truely depends on the individual dog. That is why you should go, see and interact with the dog. It is one thing to buy an 8 week old puppy sight unseen, because a puppy is "raw" and can be "molded" to a certain extent. But an older dog has been imprinted already.
You can truly find nice companions in both lines. I would advertise on the German boards and state exactly what kind of traits you are looking for, i.e. calm, but confident and/or no handler issues etc.

P.S. Where in Bavaria are you? I went to school in Augsburg and later lived in Munich before coming to the U.S. I miss Bavaria, since my parents live in Hesse and my other relatives are all in North Rhine Westphalia - so no more ties to Bavaria!
