This is a good book/dvd set to have, doesn't matter if you're thinking of Schutzhund or not.

Obedience without conflict is well worth the trouble. However it is not for the novice as the techniques need to be seen in practice to be understood. I recommend joining a SCH club.
SCH training based on motivation and building drive is great for any dog. Control is gained from the dog's desire to attain the reward not compulsion. If you have reservations about bite work then just focus on the other disciplines. Puppy bite work focusses on the toy which is just teaching the the way to release its natural desire to bite and give it a productive outlet rather than leave it to its own devices.
