I have heard from a vet that 4 to 8 weeks of total crate rest works as well as surgery in about 1/2 the cases. Totla crate rest and just take the pup out on a leash to go to the bathroom. The excessive bone will be re absorbed, I would try it before making any other decisions. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=464

Update: The vet said his prognosis is EXCELLENT! It's a very small lesion in his shoulder and should fill in completely. Prednisone for a week and Glucosamine HCI tablets. He said the medication and crate rest and he should recover nicely. My husband was reading up on this and was convinced he would live a painful life, he was in doom and gloom mode.  My mother-in-law had a stroke last month and is in really bad shape so it was "one more thing to deal with".  I'm just happy to have him home!  He was so excited to see me he almost knocked me over, he's never been away from home before. Thanks to all who responded, if I have problems down the road I will take all advice to heart.

Thats great news, dont believe everything you read on the net, there is a lot of misinformation around, good luck with the pup.
