Naya's Mom

by Naya's Mom on 08 June 2008 - 02:06

Alright, one of my Golden breeder friends just gave me a number of a vet that does hip xrays for around $50, so I'm calling them Monday.

The problem is though, with gas being $4.00 a gallon, the 70 mile away drive is a bit extreme...

But, I guess an xray will be the only way to rule out some of the issues...

Wish me lucky, I'll keep you all posted on what happens.

A a vet may be able to manipulate the leg in a manner you aren't.  I know some of the things to try, but not all.  Even when my guy had pano, I could not elicit a pain response in him when I was physically checking him, but it showed up in an x ray.

something I do before I start giving anti inflammatories for an unknown is to crate rest the dog and outdoors on a leash for potty only.   maybe you are doing this already, but I did not see it mentioned in the above posts...

also, someone mentioned spinal/back involvement.  Have you checked that?  Any change in tail carriage?

take care,

Darcy

Danica has been kept in her crate for 4 days now, and she's only out for two or three minutes, supervised, at a time...

Her tail carriage seems the same, the only think different is her personality...she seems very depressed. After I gave her the Rymidal, she stopped limping as bad, and seemed to perk right up, personality wise.

I think she's depressed because she can't play with her "sissy", Naya.

When I manipulate her paws, knee, hip, I get no pain responce, no yelp, she doesn't pull away, ears don't change, nothing...

Could be Pano.  My Czech dogs seem to have it  more often and severe. Go ahead and get the xray if she is close to a year it will put your mind at rest. I just had my Czech male xrayed as he had Pano in all four legs and when they start limping for months it can make you think HD and or ED. He xrayed great and I am glad I did it.

It sounds like Panno to me too. My young male was fine when we went away earlier in the day, had no sign of limping when we returned home he was limping as though he had a serious injury. Took him to the vet he did x-ray and poked and proded nothing showed up. He said it was Panno, put the him on Hokamix and within 2 weeks it was gone. The vet started him out on Deramax and it stopped the limping but as soon as he was out of the Deramax it came back.

homeopathic arnica might help with the pain and inflammation it works really well.

Keep in mind I am not jumping all over you but you do want to be careful about what you give your dog and when.. it is important to know what you are treating before you start givng them stuff.

Depression often accompanies pano but it may well accompany other illness as well.  I'm a little confused as to why you don't want to do an xray.. there are certain things that only an xray will uncover

Pressure applied correctly to the affected bone (in the case if pano) will absolutely bring them right down... but it requires quite a bit of pressure most often....

My advice would be to have a vet look at the dog if it doesn't resolve in a day or so.. which means I think that you will be on your way  beginning of this week since it started Friday??

Good luck

I agree with Bob-O.  Could be just a sprain.  I'd just keep resting her and let it calm down.  Could have bruised a pad too from jumping etc.  The rymadil will help out a lot!  And yep, she's most likely drepressed because she can't play like the rest.  Good luck with it and keep us posted on what ya find out.

I wouldn't give her any pain meds because you don't know what's wrong and if you mask the symptoms and she uses the leg it could exacerbate the problem.  I agree with DKiah and if it were my dog I would take her in to the vet first thing - (better safe than sorry).

Palpation (by someone who knows what they are doing) of the longbones of the affected limb will usually elicit a pain response.

Trouble with xrays is that radiographic signs of panosteitis often do not coincide with clinical lameness.
