The Ortho vets say it is not good to xray a female in heat as the joints will sublax some with the heat cycle so the results will not be as good. It is best to wait six weeks at least before schedule for a accurate rating.

Ros.   Contributary factors more than mistakes.  ( I guess what mood the panel are in at the time may make a difference  ! ).

Depends greatly on the quality of the X-ray itself & the skill of your vet , e.g. whether the positioning is correct , not just the straightness of the legs but also the turn of the legs , this will make a big difference to the results you get.    Its best to do more than one X-ray then look at them before the vet sends them off to ensure the best one is sent for scoring.

Dont waste your money now...Wait the 6 mos...the body and the joints are effected and hips are something you dont want to have a bad rating on.....no hurry...You cant breed till 2 any way so no problem..If you are doing it because she is limping or etc...then that would be different....

YELLOWROSEOFTEXAS.

With all due respect to you I can see where you are coming from but the problem with what you say is that many small breeders in the U.K.  are limited to the amount of dogs they can keep for various reasons whether it be lack of space , lack of finances , lack of time due to family commitments etc,  so this is why they have puppy X-ray screens done at around 6 mths, you can tell for sure if the hips are really bad or really good !. Sometimes they are o.k. but could go either way so you just hope they will go the right way.

If the hips do show on the puppy screen that they will definitly not be good enough to breed from in the future then people who cant keep many dogs can then find a good pet home for the pups at that earlier age , so its far better for all concerned for the pups to be re-homed earlier rather than later, ensuring that the prospective homes are right of course.
