I've always heard that Ivomec doesn't work for whip worms and that's why I use Ivomec and Safeguard (Panacur).

If you are concerned with ODing and such things with the stronger dosed horse paste (the fear of a potential overdosing is why you have to be very careful considering giving a horse wormer to a dog), you could always go with an generic form of Heartgard-6 mos supply for $19.95. No prescription needed, and comes in different 'colors' for different weights.  http://www.petshed.com/products/item139.asp is for the link for 'brown', which is for dogs 50-100lbs.

I've had plenty of fecals for my crew done in 10yrs by our vet, but never had any issues/diagnosis with whipworms, so I dunno if Ivermectin has anything to do with preventing them or not. I don't typically give a 2nd wormer very often-I do Panacur occassionally for parasitical control which seems to work very well.

Just a note of caution... there is a genetic defect found in some breeds that gives a sometimes fatal sensitivity to several drugs including ivermectin.  Inherited as a recessive, the gene is known as MDR1 and there is a DNA test available.

It is though to have originated in an ancestor of the show Rough Collie breed here in the UK in the 19th century.  Has been found in breeds that have descended from the RC but also a case, or some cases, have been found in Europe in white GSD bloodlines.

I have used liquid 1% ivermectin for years and never had a problem with it. I give it monthly, usually

on the 1st of the month at a rate of 1cc per 110 lbs. I give it to pregnant dogs and always give a dose

to the mother right before whelping. I have never had any worms of any kind when I get a health

certificate when I ship pups. I never use Frontline or any other meds for fleas or ticks but I never

have fleas or ticks. I had a couple looking at a pup and they asked what I used to worm the dogs

with. I told them ivermectin but told them a vet would never reccomend it because it is so cheap. They

looked at each other and said that is what we use. I did not know it at the time, but they were both vets.

I have a  retired stud dog 12 years old and he acts like he is 5 years old and he has had ivermectin

for several years.

Does anyone know the dosage for cats of the Ivermectin?

by k9trainer04 on 16 May 2008 - 18:05

you can buy ivermectin from your vet where you will receive the correct dosage.  This is not something I would fool around with. It does not cover whipworms.  I had all my dogs on heartguard and one was just diagnosed with whipworms, I had to treat all 9 of them. Now Im going to use interceptor which covers all three worms. Yes it is expensive but I have to make sure they are protected.  Lately, there have also been some cases of dogs on the ivermectin that still contracted heartworms.  I wouldnt count on a flea product to keep mosquitoes off no matter what they say.  Expense wise, if your dog gets heartworms, that will be expensive.  Good Luck

Ive use Ivermec liquid for 18 years no postiives and never miss and never had a problem..given orally as above . no mix with anything else,,,squirt in back of mouth  give a piece of raw hamburger or a weinie and all done.       Use the paste as Blitzen said....only an eraser of a pencil size and you will be fine...or exchange it for the bottle of Liquid...

Just make sure you get PLAIN     IVermec  (brown bottle )    not   Ivermec Plus    no Plus....someone  I know made the mistake and got the Plus   the second ingredient in Plus will harm a dog....

pinkxx88 JMO, the only person or persons that should be giving you advice on how to use ivermectin is your vet or someone at your vet!  We use it every day at work and certain dosages must be used for certain animals.  I would hate to see anything happen to your dog because of bad or wrong advice!  Call your vet!

by k9trainer04 on 17 May 2008 - 13:05

Shepherd Woman you are right.   this is what I suggested,  GO TO YOUR VET,  Heartworm disease is to serious a disease to play around with. My vet has dispensed ivermectin for years so vet's do prescribe. the vet is the only person I would trust to give out  this medication and a proper dosage.  As you can see, some people give it for years and never have a problem and the other side of the coin is my friend, a vet tech who used it and her dog did get heartworms.  For me personally, I stick with the Heartguard and Interceptor, as I have never had a dog contract heartworms while on it.  They've been on it since the 1970'.

By all means talk to your Vet. If honest (& not $ hungry) he will tell you what the dosage is. It will be just as explained above. Been there, done that years ago. If your vet tech friends dog got heartworm she wasn't doing somethiing right. either she skipped some months or didn't give enough (proper dosage).
