If your dog was vaccinated for kennel cough, it received a bordetella vaccination. It should have received a second one as this vaccine confers only short term immunity. Also, there are many strains and not all are included in the typical vaccine. Is it efficacious? In my opinion, yes. I board hundreds and hundreds of dogs annually, including keeping my own dogs as well as rescues. I require this vaccination for dogs to be on this property. I get a lot of crap about that, but, I have spent my life savings to build this business and what some people do not understand is that if a dog is sent home ill from a boarding kennel, whether it is a self-limiting infection as bordetella can be, that client is not returning. I have never once had any kennel cough here. I attribute that to a variety of factors, including excellent ventilation, low stress environment, strenuous health requirements for acceptance and not allowing dogs here who are taken to dog parks, PetSmart type stores, have just come from a shelter environment (where in our area bordetella is almost a given infection for those so confined). So yes, it is effective and no, you were not ripped off in my opinion. But, if you think you were, then who cares what others think. If your dog is involved with some activity where it is around a lot of dogs all the time, I suggest this was a good move.

Why not call your vet back and ask him (her) why that medicine was prescribed?

giblaut, in answer to your question: Because it is too easy to simply come here and bitch about how one probably got ripped off by the vet. Vets apparently don't provide any services without simply being money hungry bastards to hear some people tell. It is sad that so many have such a low opinion of them. Are they all perfect or the wisest ? Certainly not, but there are plenty out there who serve because they love animals and they do a lot of pro bono (meaning FREE) work for rescues, strays and even for people who cannot afford to pay for care for their animals, and all they get on this site is a lot of crap. I have always had excellent vets, but then, I also have a sound knowledge base myself, having chosen to get off my butt and learn rather than depend on the internet for advice.

I agree with Hodie.  The Bordetella vaccine only protects against a couple strains of it.  Many, many dogs have come into work with Kennel Cough even though they are vaccinated....just had the different strain.  And actually its reccommended that the bordetalla vaccine be boostered every 6 months.  I honestly don't vaccinate my dogs for kennel cough.  Unless I know he will be boarding in the future or around a lot of other dogs.

The vaccine I use (to prevent Kennel Cough) is a combo of Bordetella and Parainfluenza, given via the nose.
