What is the correct temperament for Schutzhund? - Page 2

A dog who has to wear a muzzle is no good for anything in my opinion.

 i think your refering to a sharper dog.

i'm in the military and prefer my easy going boy! i like knowing that he has never met a stranger and is stable enough to meet anyone, kids, elders, any color any shape and any size makes no difference to him.

 i'm in the army. i'm just getting started in sch. with him. only had him about 9 mo. of which i was deployed 6mo of that. so even though he's ''my'' dog, he likes my wife and will mind her commands better than me? go figure. anyway's i hope to start training with him this week with the trainer i found here in wa. going to my first trial tommorow and see what all the fuss is about .  so our journey is just about to begin. i'm hoping not to deploy till late 09' which is what the rumors are? never can tell though. for now we'll just keep doing simple ob till we learn more.

Fellow soldier here in a similar situation.

Fred,   is a Dog which can handle hard corrections and then get on with it,

He is a very hard Dog on the Field working, but off the field he is very good with people

I can put his feed bowl down when he is eating and take food from the bowl whist his head is in there, I have done so from 9 weeks old and i then feed him by hand the food i have taken out the bowl

I dp not do this every day just when i feel like doing it, its not a dominant thing on my part, but something wjhich i have done for over 50 years of keeping Dogs

Every one has a different idea of what the perfect dog is...But there isn't a perfect dog...And in saying that what you look for in a dog for Schutzhund of anything is the dog that best fits your needs for that purpose...

Hardness is a term that is mis-used an awful lot...It actually describes that the dog can handle pressure both from the handler and the situation...and bounce back to work...Such as...A dog must be able to handle corrections from the handler and be able to accept them and yet be able to have it not affect their work...Such as to sulk over the correction...

As you go higher and higher in competition you will find that you need to put more and more pressure on yourself and your dog...and this also translates into using more compulsion at the right times to get the most out of your dog...

Some top dogs are great to be around and a pleasure to work...others aren't as nice to be around but under the right hands are great working and trialing dogs...So when looking for a dog for yourself to work and probably trial...you must find one that fits your needs and your experience...

you know too many people confusing term hard dog here only,i think tow people here has describe the term right.dogs ability to handle stress and recover from it quickly without really losing any drive.Also you should not generalize every thing when it comes to working dog,alot depends on the job the dog is going to be doing foe example,if you are doing security and walking around with your dog in the middle of the nite some where scary you certainly do not want a dog that a bad guy can approach you and pet your dog i can tell you with guarntee that you both will be very easy kill.try doing security in the rough areas with a dog that so wellcomming to every one see how secure you will feel.german shepherds do different jobs and certainly a shutzhund dog trined mostly with prey certainly is not going to fulfill every need.and also remember just because a dog is a police dog does not mean that it is a good dog. have a nice day.hars dog and a dominant dog and a koo koo dog they are all different dogs not same.

Definetley easy going and good round people and animals.
