depends on the dog I agree.... ranges from positive praise /mild correction, to e collar and toy rewards whatever works best for each dog. There is no set in stone training or magic forumla to me, read the dog and work it.

more praise than punishment, lots of voice, lots and lots of play, and occasional treat.

but always tailored to the individual needs/temperment of the dog

I use love and praise and lots of treats.  If they don't respond satisfactorily to that, then I whack over the head with a stiff stick.  If they still disobey, I crank up the electricity till I get submission and the correct response/position. 

I'm feeling mean today, just couldn't resist.

Motivational training with toy or food, whichever works for a particular dog.

I started out being very stern but started working with a motivational trainer, nothing better than a dog that loves to work.

Have someone videotape you training and some people will be suprised how demanding and stern they are.

We all have our own way that works for us. Main thing is just doing it consistently..period...

This one clearly depends upon the dog.

Some are so object oriented they train for the toy.

Some so food driven they train for treats.

Some, but few, can just train for the love of it -- although many can get to that point eventually.

This is not about trainer bias, but dog preference.

(Sadly, I appear to now have a pup who would train for sex, but I can't arrange it.)
