interesting,, so the first person comes to buy a pup and takes pick, 1200, thank you,, second person comes over, i still have pick (my pick anyway), 1200, thank you. i can see where this could be a way of making more money.
puppy price is set for a litter. pet quality (ie missing teeth, testicles, or long coat, etc.) get a discount along with limited registration. thats how we do it anyway.

GARD- I want to imput that the black male chris has is one hell of a pup. I have said a few time that if i had the room i would make an exception for him.. Even though he is not a Czech dog.. Great grips and very outgoing.
On your question- I would say this ask the breeder if they will pick the best pup in the litter for what you want . If they only want 1200.00 to give you the option to pick what you think is best i would not go for that. I have raised litters myself and i know that after watching them for 8 to 9 weeks i know what pups i think are top sport / police prospects and what i think would go for a pet or low sport dog. I have many people who have tryed to pick pups based on color or what they see when they come. But you can not as the buyer know everything about a pup in and hour. I as the breeder will send a buyer what ever pup best fits there needs and if i have people who come to see and buy a pup for pet i will bring out the pups that would be a good match for them ...

The thing that I don't understand, though perhaps it's because I'm not a breeder, but if the so-called "pick" puppy is the very best of the litter, a breeder would presumably want this puppy to go to the best possible owner, where it will be taken to it's full potential and, ideally, be a terrific representation of ones kennel, would they not? This being so, why would you then charge this ideal owner more money? I realize that all situations are different, but if this "pick" puppy is one that you expect to be shown and/or trained by the new owner and become a representative of your kennel and breed, would you not want to make the puppy accessible to the best owner possible rather than just the wealthiest?
Now, I know that $200 is not a big difference in price, but I have seen this amount for "pick" puppies range from that number to as much as $1500. I know if I had an outstanding puppy, I would either be keeping it myself, or bending over backwards to make sure it is in the best situation possible for it's future success, not just trying to make the most money off of it.
And yes, I do know that there are many fine breeders out there who feel the exact same way, and naturally they are exempt from such criticism. JMO.

malinda, I had my eye on that black pup from Chris too. If I had been in the market for a pup he was my pick too. I wonder if we are talking about the same pup. I think so. What a little fireball! From the last litter?

We must be talking about the same pup. He is a little troll.. I held for the tattoo on him and he waged his tail the whole time.. He got down and wanted to play with the towel.. Verynice pup .. Chris wanted to keep him and keeps telling me that i should but i dont have room for another male and I normaly would be only after a Czech / DDR dog. But i do have a west german working line who has made her way in as a just like her that much. I seen Dagen a few days ago and i realy like him.. If i did not have 2 young dogs that are 4 months old to raise and train then it would be even more tempting. I just have to learn to say NO more often.. I have 7 dogs in my house right now and realy think that another would be a bad idea...But he truly is a nice pup and anyone who gets him is very lucky as his grips are nice for hi age and he holds on for dear life... I already have a burly brut for a male and dont realy need a pissing match as right now. my male thinks he is gods gift to the ladys..... HAHA..

I am a breeder and i will imput this also
Picks for me go in order of deposits and all pups are priced the same. Unless there is a discount for something like hernias, or something like that...
I will tell the pet people up front that ( this pup is not a good canidate for pet. here are the puppies that will fit your needs. If a working home comes to look here is the litter of pups this pup has better drives , grip, more outgoing, exc... this pup would make a better pet at this time , maybe turn out to be great working dog.... but at this point is more pet.
Here is a pup that is my 1st or 2nd pick as a working prospect...
I will not sell my high working prospect as a pet because i dont want a pet owner to have a dog that does not fit there home and i dont want them to have to bring a dog back because i sold them a working dog who needs a job.... If a breeder does not want to help you get the best pup to fit your needs take go somewhere elce.

Re: Pick Puppy
The simple fact is "Pick" may not be pick at 16weeks/ 12 months / 2years etc.
Re: Dagen
The remaining three pupps out of my litter are well taken care of and im in no rush.

P.S Please dont dirty up a good thread by talking about my stuff. This is a good post and could be very educational. Lets not forget everyone has an opinion/definition of words associated with working prospects.

malinda, black collar, right? We have to be talking about the same pup I think. I don't remember the color of the dog. I remember my picks were black then red collar. Is that stinker still for sale? Darn, I'd like to have that pup.
Why am I asking? I have two very nice showline males 12 month old males I have to sell that I held back from a nice litter I had. I don't have room for a male puppy right now but that boy-he's nice, very nice, just my type. Of course if he's still for sale I could build a new kennel or put a new wing on the house to make room for him.

by jletcher18 on 28 March 2008 - 02:03
