The dog trots next to a person on a bike, going for about 5 miles. Then there is a 20 minute break to allow the dog and handler to rest, get a little bit of water and the judge to inspect the dog, especially the paws. Then the next 5 miles are done, followed by the same break for the same reasons. Then the last two or so miles, followed by a very short break and some rudimentary obedience. The AD is part of the requirements for the breed survey. If one does not intend to do a breed survey, there is no reason to do it.
Obviously, it makes sense to train for this, both the dog and the human. It may not be held if the temperature is at or going above 74 degrees F.

No, You do not need a SchH1 or higher before to take the AD, but first you have to pass the BH
and its 16 months old
Hodie is right in his parts of the test, and as he says it would pay to train before going for it least wise i will with 'Fred' the Dog needs to be fit

No Steve, you do not have to pass the BH first.
My daughter rode the bike for my male when he was just over 16 months old. We didn't earn his BH until he was just over 2 1/2 years old. He is now 4 years old and we will be trying for his SchH1 soon. He was neutered at 2 1/2 years old so we don't have to think about the breed survey for him.
You do have to have a BH before you can do SchH 1, SchH A, TR1, OB1, or the FH1 and maybe even the RH and WH. It is not required for the HGH.

Thank you Hodie for the information. I didn't realize that you had to have the AD in order to Breed Survey. I am learning with my first showline pup =) And I am also new to Schutzhund.... I guess I need to work on getting in shape as well then!! =)

I think that the dogs used to have to have the BH before going for the AD. But, I noticed that has now written differently in the latest version of the rulebook.
Lucky for me, my dogs are HGH titled, so they don't have to have AD to qualify for the Breed Survey.

Over here in Belgium you cannot do the AD without first having passed the BH
Of this i am certain but i will phone the person who trains with us later on to see if that is right, If not i will correct it on here
Why i say this is because last november i was talking to a fellow who trains at the same club and i said i would like to Train Fred for his AD, and he said he could not go for either at the time, because of his age he was 12 months old then i said i knew he was not old enough then but i was going to slowly increase his stamina ready for the work in a few months time
But i will certainly find out
As for me i will now go for the BH with him, He is Trained up to Sch1 but needs some good weather to get the Polish on him, the Field has been a Bog all winter and has slowed down all work for the Dogs But i am not in any hurry this summer will do fine

Hello Marsha
Just heard from The Belgian SchH team Captain, that in Germany you can take the AD first before the BH
In Belgium where i Live , You cannot take the AD before your dog has passed its BH just as i thought
It seems in the USA you can take the AD first
Strange how different countries have certain different rules, a little misleading for all i think
