Nadar, one of mine did the same one ear up sometimes, then the other but he was able to prick them up breifly if interested in something. I was told the latter was the reassurance that they would come up. I agree wholeheartedly with the Gelatin.  Her ears didn't come up until nine months but have been up perfectly ever since.

As far as taping, I had a couple of people advise me to do it and I didn't. The thing is, if I had done it everyone would say they came up because I taped them. So, the question is, how reliable is taping, really.

And if you have intentions to breed this dog (and I hope you don't) I think it would be unfair to future buyers as the pups would probably have weak ears too, to some extent. They would see your dog's ears up and assume they were that way naturally.  That's just my take on it.

Good advice allaboutthedawgs.

He's a family pet.  No breeding in his future no matter what kind of ears he has.

I just want him to look like a pure-bred GSD so I don't have to put up with the "What is he mixed with?" questions.

fORGET THE TAPING      PEOPLE NEED TO FORGET THE WORD TAPING AT ALL COST...

ONLY AMERICAN SHEPHERD PEDIGREES HAVE MORE PROBLEMS WITH EARS...NOT OUR BLOODLINES...SOME TAKE TILL 8 MOS. OLD.....LEAVE THE TAPE FOR THE MAIL...

NOW IF YOU  HAVE  A PUP FROM A MOM AND DAD WHO YOU SEE EARS DOWN ,,WHY DID YOU BUY A PUP FROM THAT ANYWAY.....CHECK REPUTATION OF ALL BLOODLINES BEFORE YOU BUY A PUP.......ALSO KEEP OTHER DOGS AND PUPPIES AWAY FROM YOUR PUP TILL HE IS OLDER AND HIS EARS ARE FIRMLY UP AND ALL IS KOSHER.....

CARTLADGE DAMAGE CAN HAPPEN VERY EASY  IN ACTIVE PUPS WITH OTHER LARGER ANIMALS OR KIDS HANDLING A DOG IMPROPERLY...

Nadar,

If he is still teething = it is common for the ears to be weak.  I would not panic at all - I had an 8 month old that finally ears came up and he was the most handsome dog I have ever seen...........also comments from all.  You may want to be careful taping  - in fact I was shown by a vet how to just massage the ear upward - like 4 times a day for proper blood flow and provided lots of windy days to blow those babies up .........lots of chewing on bones ...........as we know the muscles on the top of the ear carriage (between the ears)  needs to be strengthened before it can hold the big ears up.  And the more you tape the more sensitive the ear becomes.  I would also have a vet check the tempanic membrane.  I know a GSD puppy that one ear was not coming up and the tempanic membrane (hope I am saying this right)  was not completely formed with cause some slight problem and was scraped and put on antis and the darn ear came right up.  So just giving you some information.  Good luck.

Yap was the  longest of all my males to have his ears stand  ...The pup pic was taken just at  5 mos old and his ears did not stand until  7-8 mos old....straight and never mved....but look at the size of his structure.....big boned....lots of Calcium to go to teeth and feet while his ears got it last...This is why diet and Nutrajoint are very important....as pups......from the feeding of the bitch before she whelps till she weans her pups,,,the diet is most important to fill with extra  choline,,,extra raw and extra support of vit c and folic .......people who do not feed bitch and pups end up with more than floppy EARS...WHEN I HAVE PUPS I EAT MORE SCRAMBLED EGGS AND LIVER AND MALT O MEAL THAN THE NORMAL JOE.....LOL

Nadar I do agree somewhat with what has been said here. If your dog is still teething that can play a big role in his ears not coming up. But if your dog is just a pet anyway I would not wait alot longer to tape them, if all you want is an "ears up GSD pet". In the meantime try some Knox gelatine and bones for him to chew, but if those teeth fall out and new ones are in and his ears still are down like a hound you should get some rollers in or something to help him out. If they go up with help, so what better than them not ever going up. The problem comes if he was intended for breeding, but even a pet GSD looks better with their ears UP!
