 ec,

I agree with Renz now that you clarify. If you put nothing on the nose, then this is a serious drainage. There is a serious infection somewhere and waiting until Monday is probably NOT a good thing.

Last time I saw this type of drainage the dog had distemper. How old is this dog and where has it been? I hope it has been fully vaccinated and it is something like a foreign body in the nostril. The fact that it IS localized, should it remain localized, suggests it is not a systemic infection. But this needs treatment right away.

Be sure to ask the vet to check for NASAL MITES.

I have seen this condition. It tends to be missed by most vets.

I dont have a clue what caused this but it does look infected.

Looking at the photo again in daylight I would have to agree that it looks infected. Under last night's incandescents the yellow crust and nasal exudate. Hence, I withdraw my suggestion of at-home remedies and join those who've recommended a vet visit.

Just an update for those who may be interested.  I took Iso up to the Vet this morning and it appears that it's a bacterial infection and is isolated to the lower part of the left nostril.  We're treating it with Chepalexin 500mg twice a day and some Panolog Ointment three times a day and we'll see if that clears it up.  If not then he'll go back in and we'll scope his nose.

Once again thanks for the advice and information.

Good deal and I hope that this is all it takes. It was pretty clear that it was an infection of some sort.

Good luck. Thank you for the update.

Before you even consider anything as invasive as anesthesia and rhinospcopy (always preceded by xrays), have your vet rule out NASAL MITES

A parasitic infestation cannot be cured by antibiotics alone.

 Louise,

I will definitely bring that up to my vet if the situation persists.  In your experience, will Nasal Mites remain localized to one nostril or will they migrate to both?

Because I'm sure so many of you have been up nights wondering how my dogs nose was doing I thought I'd share the results.

Well indeed the nose looks much better already. Yes, I stay up late at nights, and while I am working I sometimes HAVE wondered how your dog was coming along. Nice to know he/she is doing much better.
