Okay, I strongly recommend you go to Preston's site that I linked above.  Click on each topic and read them and also look at the videos.  There is a section called  motivation that touches on your original question.   The best thing would be to find someone that will track with you.   Even if you have to drive a couple hours to meet up with someone, it would be of great benefit to you and Boss, especially in the beginning.

iluvmygsd...Someone taught you the very old way of running a track...basically with a drag bag...but anyways...Like Don said...what you do and how you do it on a track all depends on your dog and what he's like...You do use food in each and every foot step...and then at the end you can put a handful of food...I use hot dogs...only enough that your dog can eat them and swallow them and move on...not enough for him to loose his concentration on what's at hand...

I do use food (hot dogs) on the track and at the end of the track...but then I always continue on the track a little bit more...and put a toy there...but Molly is also right in that if your dog is too driven for the toy and thinks only of it then you have to take the toy away...

thanks for the advice everyone...i just went out and tried it with him and it went ok i guess...lol..he kept wanting to pull ahead (im guessing thats a common problem?) and he thought the flags were toys ... but after a couple steps/hotdogs he would get the idea and atleast kept his nose to the ground....

suenicc- i will be sure to read every word of it...

With a youngster remember tracking (like spitting) shouldn't be done into the wind.

Or maybe that's spitting and pissing you aren't supposed to do in the wind...........

The scent pad or the start of the track is very important, especially at this stage.

I cant believe we are talking tracking when it is -2 and a foot of snow here.

Screw all of you people down south!  You should win the FH championship every year.  I guess you guys get screwed in july and august.

2 feet of snow? I was debating on wearing shorts yesterday but opted not to, just because my legs are too white.  I'll rub on some of that self tanner or hit the tanning bed a couple times before I go public. I'm not one for scaring people.

Don, be nice to the Southern folks.  You never know when we may need their houses in Feb.  Besides it gives me a reason to skip the dreaded tracking.

My nieces were whining about having cabin fever the other day so my B.I.L. jokingly told them to go build an igloo.  So they did and they have been sleeping in it...-17 degrees and all.  I didn't believe them until I went to take these pics.  They build girls tough in Michigan.

It gets damn toasty in that thing.

By the way.  Did anyone catch the Nat. Geo special on global warming?  One word--- BULLSHIT.
