Two moons, I have to agree with you whoeheartedly. Great dogs are not just a pedigree. They are made, not born. They are a function of the animal/human relationship. People like Cesar Milan get more out of throw away mutts than all of these ego driven "show" and "working" types put together. Dogs give their all because of love and an intense desire to please, not because of some lock step training program that's supposed to represent a dog's heart or intellect. There are great dogs living in pounds in this country and there are highly overrated GSD's in this country and in Europe as well. Let's be honest, there are 27 or more strains of GSD's in the world and I don't buy the hype that only working east german or working west german or working czech or american show or west german show lines are the only "worthy" ones. And BTW folks, I've had an american smooth coat GSD that could protect better than any of these dogs if given an excuse. I've also had two long haired GSD's that were highly praised for their obedience and protection work by their trainers. And these trainers worked with military guard dogs every day of the week. Point is, I'll take work ethic over pedigree every time. All dogs have a heart even if they don't have an elitist bloodline. And I feel blessed to have had the ones I've had so far.
