Looks like some type of an allergic reaction to me.  As his muzzle looks to be a little swollen too from the picture.

Allergic reaction to what, you may never know.

Let us know how you make out.  The benadryl may not be enough, ie: he may need a quick steroid shot.

I keep Bag Balm for such as this     Looks like a bee sting,  spider bite,,,   snake bite  there is definate swelling in the nose area.....Benedryl    50  mg   2 of the pink tabs....every 8 hours.....if no bag balm   rub extra virgin olive oil for comfort   it has healing in it.....but bag balm  is the best......get it at feed store....I use bag balm for dog bites....I have had to disconnect to high prey bad boys several times and lost half my hands and legs to bites of anger...and frenzy,,,not toward me...I use bag balm and have never had any infection     after cleaning with wound care solvent.....

This morning his bump is 1/2 the size.  One side of the bump has gone down.  I am going to give him another benedryl, and wait for the vets call this morning, but I think this was a bite,  He woke up and was running around like his usually self and ate all his breakfast, had a normal stool.  I think like that last suggestion I will get some bag balm.  Thanks for all the suggestions and help and I had no idea where to start.

The fact that the size of the bump has decreased in size is a good sign and it is likely it was the result of a sting of some sort. Bag balm will do nothing to ease swelling or infection. It is a petroleum based product and works well to lubricate skin and it does have an odor that many dogs find objectionable, as do some people. Giving another Benadryl sounds reasonable and likely what your vet would also say. As long as the dog is otherwise normal, it sounds like you need to investigate the area where he is kept more carefully. Sometimes wasps come out even in cold. I was surprised to see a few flying around just a few weeks ago and believe me, where they were and how they survived the cold winter we have had to date is a mystery to me.

Good luck.

How is your little guy's nose bump doing?

by Huck on 04 July 2008 - 04:07

Our Austrailan Shepherd has this EXACT condition (from looking at the pictures) what happened to your dog as a result? DId your dog's bump start to bleed? Our dog's nose is bleeding where the lump is.  Did you have to go to the vet, or did antihistamenes clear it up? Let us know,...we are getting pretty worried.

Thanks for your help

I had GSD get a rattlesnake bite with similier traits. We had heard her yelp while out in the pasture and a few minutes later she went down and her nose swelled like this. A few hours later she was fine except for the swelling. Never saw bite marks or bleeding either. We think it was  a small snake and it did not inject too much venom.

For stings, a Golden Seal poultice will take down the swelling and if the stinger is embedded, it will pull it up to the surface. You will be able to feel it by running the tip of your finger lightly over the swollen area when you change the poultice. If you feel the stinger, remove it with a tweezer. Sometimes a magnifying glass will help to get the tweezer positioned.

This is what I do for stings, it works really well.

Could your poor baby have tried getting out of his crate when you are out? Could it be a friction bump?I only ask as my little girl used to try and get out of her crate if we were not there(she was never left for long )but she had a bump on her nose where she kept trying to get out.

Jack,

I also agree with the possibility of a spider bite or a sting,  I have seen spider bite's cause similar lump's on my dog's in the past.   Keep a close watch on it and the dog's reaction.     I have Black widow's and Brown recluce spider's to worrry about, but any spider can cause this kind of mass.   Other insect bite's could also cause this not just spider's.

Sound's like the dog is improving so it couldn't be anything too serious.     But I would investigate the spider population in your garage,   Recluce spider's are wide spread and can be hidden in dark corner's or old box's.   The bite's can be very serious.   A black widow bite would have more severe symptoms sooner.

Maybe ask an exterminator for advice if you find a these spider's in your garage.

Brent.
