Jcc thanks for the last link - very interesting & informative. I'm not going to say I understand it all completely but things are becoming a little clearer. Genes are inherited from the parents & within those there may recessive/dominant ones that will manifest themselves depending on how they combine with the genes their mate possesses. If you see what I mean...

I find it quite amazing how animal breeds have developed even before the advent of Mendel's genetic theory. But I suppose things may have being a little more brutal and culling at birth was a definite option.

On a side note I recall seeing a documentary where a theory was expounded that the emotion of the parents at conception will have a bearing on the personality traits of the offspring.
