We've got a similar program in my area. Our county Animal Shelter is tended by prisoners from the neighboring jail. The place is spotless clean and you can tell that the animals are being well cared for. I've found that when I pull dogs for rescue groups from there that if I want to know what the dog is REALLY like, I need to ask one of the prisoners instead of the staff.
They, also, have a very successfully Canin Companions for Independence puppy raisers program at that prison. The pups raised there are at about a 70% sucess rate. They have folks in the area that check out the pups on the weekends to give the dogs exposure to normal family life.

this sounds like a great program. it gives the prisoners an opportunity to do something good and worthwhile, i imagine it has also a great "calming effect" on those who participate. it relieves some of the tax burden for regular citizens and the animals get the benefit of regular care that "under-budgeted" depts may not be able to accomodate. kudos to sheriff joe! i wish some one would have the courage to implement that in california!!
