nO ONE HERE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT BUYING A SCHUTZHUND DOG FOR A PD...

Larry Filos wife was on a usa team   so he is well known  and Steinig Tal is the finest...He owns and operates an Academy for Police K9 training....It would help for those that dont know anything about police work to not confuse the issue...

Mals dont get the job done like a gsd does....lots of police department get junk dogs and then they complain and gripe and get rid of them because they are under paid and let some one steer them down the wrong road...

You dont need to go to GERMANY        OR BELGIUM WHEN YOU HAVE AN ACADEMY RIGHT HERE ON    IN CAMPBELLSPORT, WISCONSIN,,...

 Contact Witmer-Tyson kennels.  www.tysonkennels.com

Randy Tyson has started many a PD with her outstanding dogs.  They are located in Menlo Park, Ca.

All of our local police depts and out of state use her dogs.  Check San Jose Police website www.sjpd.org, my police dept Fremont Police www.fremontpolice.org.  For pics.  She is an excellent trainer and can point you in the right direction. Not only do all of our bay are depts get their dogs from their kennels, but she does all the training for all of the depts.  She is an excellent resource if nothing else.  I beleive she has helped depts without K9 units start and train, and develope a program whether FT or PT.

Good Luck!!!  and once you create a patch, please contact me, I am a k9 unit patch collector.

i would strongly suggest that you join the euro board.  (yahoo)  there are a number of fine LEOs/k9 on that list.

we just recently had a nice and rather long discussion about REAL working dogs.  i think you could get a lot of

pointers on that list as well as make some good contacts.

Hello, we work with Suzanne Eviston of Snomohish Washington. She is a police K9 officer, has trained and titled SchH dogs, is a breeder, and importer. Suzanne is absolutely top cabin with her dogs and training program. She supplies dogs to NW and Canada. www.grunheide.com

She will be an excellent, knowledgeable source. Suzanne is very honest.

Another resource is John Riboni of the Placer Co Schutzhund Club. Been to the WUSV and is trainer/supplier for several Northern Calif. depts. www.placercountyschutzhund

Hayward California has a top urban K9 unit and can also give good advice.

All these folks prefer german shepherds and can explain why.

Ivan Balabanov is another honest, experienced dog trainer both SchH and DVG with World wins. Ivan does police dual dogs and specializes in malinois yet he also has shepherds. Google ivan balabanov

Good Luck,

I think all of the suggested people are worth a look.  I hate to say it, but Ivan may drain your account.  He has very very nice dogs that will probably be trained better than most of the others, but Ivan is a well-known, highly demanded trainer.   One of the best trained dogs I have ever seen was a k9 trained by Ivan.  With high demand comes high price.

One other person to look at is Randy Rhodes.  He provides police dogs to several places, including the Bahamas.

Mike Diehl is also a guy I would talk to.

I am not an LEO and have only been around the working dogs community for less than two years--so take this with a grain of salt if you wish--but I would definitely recommend that you talk to Mike.  He is the real Diehl (sorry for the bad pun) and a very approachable guy.  Here's his site: http://www.diehlspolicek9training.com/

Best of luck.

Mike runs a very large K9 department for Indianapolis/Marion Co police.  I think they have around 85-90 units.    He is a world competitor in Sch and WPO.  He knows what the requirements are for a successful K9 unit.  Which, I'm sure all that mentioned have the knowledge.

Mike Diehl?  I second that motion!  Get in touch with him and I'm sure he can help you out.

I hope you can find a suitable GSD for your program.  Where I live there's only 1 GSD police dog in the valley - the rest are Mal's or Mal crosses (and doing very well - not all Mal's are junk).
