I would't really say this method is outside the box but I would call this training in drive. Alot of people I know use this way with a high drive dog. Some also use this way to build drive. I also train this way. Yes, Ivan trains the same way but with alot more movement on the handlers part. You are doing a good job and the dog looks to be happy while working.

I actually never saw Ivan's video's, the way I train comes from Bernhard Flinks.

My "outside the box" comment was not about "training in drive" it was about doing the in motion excersises from the front while walking backwards, I just never saw anyone else do it that way is all.  It gives you a great view of the dogs' quickness and compliance and allows for an instant correction if needed without looking over or back at the dog.

Melanie

Hi Melanie

My"outside the box" comment was not about "training in drive" it was about doing the in motion excersises from the front while walking backwards, I just never saw anyone else do it that way is all.

I have tried it before but 'got my knickers in knot' so to speak, so reverted to what I know to do.  Now, after watching your video will try it again with my new dog when he is ready for positions.

I always teach the rudiments of distance control early so positions, when introduced have never been a problem. Now I have another way to attack this exercise so thanks for sharing that one with us.

Hi Melanie!

Looks good. I teach my dog change of positions from the front as well. I do it stationary though. The reason being, in ring sport, you have to do change of positions from a distance. The dog looses points if they creep forward, so I teach position changes with my dog in front of me so she does not have the opportunity to move forward. I also use a park bench or table so the dog is off the ground and cannot move forward.

One of the reasons I cross train and train with multiple people is to see and learn different technuiqes and ways of doing things. Different things work for different dogs or for the job the dog is training for.

I am a big fan of people who "think outside the box" and don't just do things just because that's how they were taught by one trainer so "that's the way it's done".

I enjoy your videos. Looking good. Keep it up.

Thanks for sharing.

Mel:

You guys look great and love the idea of practicing the in motion in front.  Andy always looks so happy when you two are working!  I think his focus on you is really nice.

Molly's moving down and moving sit are getting better - but I am still turning in front of her on the moving sit.  I will try this new way tomorrow when I take her out for some training.

I was wondering if doing some training your way - it might help with her retrieve - sitting in front.  She really balks at that one.  Once she has something in her mouth - she anticipates me taking it away.  I am running her around, heeling away with her - but when I try to get her to sit in front she gets jumpy.  I think the sitting in front on recall  is a problem to - as in all of her cd's and in the bh - she immediately went to the finish.  I do reward in front and leave out the finish - about 50% of the time.  Anyone have any suggestions what I could do to break this bad habit?

Mel and Andy - keep up the great work!

Cheryl
