Bob-O

A broken bone is often stronger after healing, due to the large bone mass that surrounds the area once broken. I know too well, as I broke eight (8) larger bones in about two (2) seconds one (1) afternoon. The key thing is that the break heals with proper geometry. Pins/plates/screws are required to brace the broken bones when the bone can easily shift during the healing process. Not every part of the body can be securely fixed with a cast. I have a few ounces of titanium hardware myself! The metal braces do not add strength to the healed joint-that is done by the new bone mass. I think that if the break is clean; and toe can be buddy-wrapped as Louise mentions, and the dog is allowed some downtime, that this break will heal sufficiently with no consequences. The BIG thing here is that no joint damage exists and the bones are aligned as they should be. Regards, Bob-O

Talk to a couple of good ortho vets and get some opinions-won't hurt...I would think if allowed sufficient time to heal, it would be fine. I think more complications result if one pushes too soon after an injury.

We've had 2 different dogs with broken toes, both top agility GSD's..... both pretty bad breaks (the females was shattered in like 3 places)but with extensive rest and rehab and did just fine. Takes time and needs monitoring and then those muscles have to be gently reconditioned and strengthened.
