Hi Molly,
I love the blacks, cant really say why. I know they are bred for color and not any other particular trait.
Maybe thats why you dont see alot of them titled. I see a few in working lines. Most I have seen were show.
Do you know of any you would consider great dogs?

Actually, I'm looking at your website now. thanks for the link.

There are many titled black working-line dogs. I have never personally seen a German show-line black dog. I know there are blacks in American lines but I have no interest in and therefore no knowledge of those lines. I guess the ones I would consider 'great" in my opinion, which as I said is only based on personal first-hand experience, are the black dogs I have myself seen work, known personally, and used in my breeding program - V-Xito vd Maineiche Schh3,KKl-1 - V-Sid vd Fasanerie Schh3,KKl-1 - V-Quattro v Spitzbubezwinger Schh3,FH,KKl-1. These dogs are on my stud dog page if you care to see them. There are others, just not on the tip of my tongue right now. Also I'm sure there are quite a few very impressive working black dogs in Europe.

Hi Vixen,
The black gene is pretty cool to have, I bred my girl that has a black gene, to a boy that did not
carry the black gene, and there were no black pups(litter of 12)
It's that way with the labrador retrievers too, the black gene has to be on both sides, at least appearing
within the pedigree 4 generations back.
If you breed 2 yellow labs together, you will have all yellow pups, same goes for two black GSD's
together, you should get all black, and they are no harder to breed than any other color.
And a good looking solid black, will always have a few white hairs somewhere..........
Years ago in the late seventies early eighties, I bred only black German Shepherds, then I bred
labrador retrievers, then decided to start up with the German Shepherds again, I went from American
GSD lines that were good working dogs, for search and rescue, and OB, and now breed East German
DDR Shepherds, this dog is my screen saver (Love the picture!) I had his daughter way back when
she was pure black.
He is my sable boy's Great-great-great grand-sire, it's so nice to have him in my pedigree,
even if he is distant, it's like having a little of my past back.

In my experience with my own dogs, the white on the chest definitely does not go away. In fact, as the dog gets bigger, the white patch gets bigger. Because it is usually in the middle of the chest, sometimes it's hard to see.
I also thought the labrador gene for black was dominant. Could be wrong.
