Well, Hell! You can breed to Dean Calderon's dog Verdi v. Karthago, he is a SchH3 and may have an FH, not sure! He is a powerful dog! Love to watch that dog work!! His fee is only $750! And I bet that dog will be on the podium some day, be nice to have puppies out of him before he is on that level! And Dean guarantees at least 3 puppies! I am taking a bitch named Troja to Verdi in the next few weeks (or as soon as she comes in). It will be a nice line breeding on Aly Vordersteinwald (sp?)!

With puppies selling for $3K at Kraftwerk these days, $750 for stud fee sounds pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the info all. That makes sense. Whoever said ignorance is bliss should've talked to me first!

I own two (2) stud males and have often wondered myself what constitutes a fair stud fee. As was mentioned above, that is first at the discretion of the breeder and second at the strength of the market. For a breeding of a qualified male and female-perhaps the stud fee should be 50% of the expected price of any puppy from the litter? I do not know anyone who makes this practice, but it is perhaps a starting point. I also think the guarantee of at least two (2) or three (3) live puppies is not a bad one, provided the small number of offspring or no offspring is not a reflection of the male's reproductive strength or lack thereof.
Just a sidebar; but I will present it. It is considered ethical practice to allow one (1) breeding free of charge if the female did not conceive on the first breeding and is the stated recommendation of most kennel clubs. And, never discount the strength of an excellent relationship with the owner of the stud male. That should be in place anyway, and I think we often forget the value of personal relationships. Personally, I want to know a lot about the person who wishes to breed to a male of mine.
I have seen stud fees vary from $600.00 for a very nice V-1 rated male to $2,000.00 for a VA-rated male who in my opinion was not the quality of the V-1 male. But that is just my personal opinion in this case. There is no real answer to this question, but the value and breed strength of the offspring must be on the mind of the owner of the female.

triode,
I saw the rating. What I was trying to say was, to me, it is a combination of what I posted.
Question is also - why would someone want to breed to "X" dog?
Thanks!

Most working line stud fees range from $600 to $1000 in the USA.
