Here's a little info on micro-chipping that you may want to think about....

All puppies from all of my litters are tattooed using the German registry "code" in their right ear.  I normally microchip them as well, and record the tattoo # as well as the microchip # on the microchip information sheet as a second form of permanent id.  When I run out of microchips as I did recently, I tell the owners to get the microchip done by the vet on their first visit - most of them do this.  I also recommend leather collar and id tag left on at all times though I always caution that permanent id (microchip) is important as collars can be removed.

patannbar,

Thanks for that link, it is very interesting, I had my Mira
microchipped when she got her hips ofa'ed, and then
a few months later, while we were in N.H. vacationing
my sister-in-law was petting Mira & noticed something
like a lump, inbetween her shoulder blades.

I just thought it was a bee sting, then it took me months
later to realize it was the darn microchip, it hasn't gotten
any bigger, it's just been the same size for 4 years,
weird....................

I'm investing in a tatoo kit, there was a post about what kinds
to get, I'll have to read them!

Thanks Vince,

This has been a very helpful post.

You're welcome Mirasmom.  It is a rather interesting read.   It will make me think twice before I microchip my next litter of pups.

I have bought pups that weren't tatooed or microchipped and just got it done later.  When I picked up my last pup I drove him out to John Nussbaum because he's a USA tatooer and he took care of it for $5.  Microchip at my local vet costs $15.  Done.

As to the breeder in question, it would be mere speculation on my part to guess why they don't want to do it.

Why someone from a country that requires tattooing for registration would not want to comply would worry me a LOT!

I dont do pups but all dogs on property are tatooed at 24 mos for ofa  ..... some vets wont do pups too young.....I will  not microchip for reasons above and more ,,,dont trust it and it is not a valid way of identifying if a lot of vets all over do not have but one old tool to read them.....

tatooe is seen and cant be removed unless you mutilate the dog..

I have the tool but pups ears are soft and I have had three vets refuse   Im not keeping a pup till hes old enough to tatooe , just for that reason....I can require all day long ,,,,people dont want to be told they have to do anything, nowadays....

If they want to chip  thats their decision.......not mine.......my contracts are so harsh anyway.....thats enough without telling them they have to chip or tatooe   ....akc doesnt require....My males are all dna cert  so that question is satisfied..as to proof of the parentage....

ProudShepherdPoppa:

There are infact several universal readers out there that read european chips.  Our club has one, and it does read all types of chips. It cost our club $150.00 a great investment for trials, and now that USA is allowing chips for GSDs its great for dogs who like my male, you can't read the darn tatoo on!  Some dogs have so much hair in their ears, that it is challenging to read when you are there with a judge, a quick scan of the reader makes things go much faster, and there aren't any issues!

I have also read the article on the chips, and until I see something substantial showing cancer in the chips bieng used in dogs & cats, I will continue to chip my pets.  It's a sure way to prove you are the owner if your dog were to be lost or stolen!  If you are really worried about a european chip not being read, chip the dog with an american chip.
