If I had it to do over again, I would seek the help of an experienced breeder/GSD person. There are SO many pitfalls that a newbie can stumble into. No matter HOW well informed you are, you can still make mistakes, just because you're inexperienced.
Unfortunately, I don't KNOW any experienced breeders/owners in my area yet, and certainly not one who would have driven all the way to the States with me to check out a pup.

i would think this is a true statement, "I just dont believe that there are more peopel out there that got cheated, than peopel that have recieved what they were looking for". However, if you are the one that got scanned, it is 100% scam.

So I think I "did my homework" this time, but I am still afraid that if I wire money to the breeder I may end up not getting any dog shipped to me or getting a dog that is "a duck". What do I do? Pay half now and half on receipt of dog? Do breeders agree to this? What is the usual way of dealing with this to protect both seller and buyer?

leftbarrrelsam,
I sure don't know of any breeders who would accept half now and the balance upon dog's arrival to buyer. As far as I know there isn't anything that protects both buyer and seller. Short of picking up your purchase in person, its just a risk the buyer takes. Just for your peace of mind, you might tell the seller that you will be picking the dog/pup up in person, and wait for the reaction. If the seller doesn't like that, then perhaps thats a red flag.

leftbarrrelsam,
good that you did your homework. Even with the most intensive research and looking to find the right match, a puppy is & always will be a crapshot. As a breeder I look at it this way : You buy a pup out of my breedings, I can assure you that I did my very best to have stable & sound & healthy animals. When there is a request, there will be mail x-change & maybe a couple of calls. Now I have a fair idear of what you are looking for, if I have a pup that I consider to fit your needs, the deal goes on. But I will always point out that I am not able to see the future, maening simply, I have a fair idear how that pup could turn out, if beeing with me, but I have no glue as to how it will devellop under your care.
Most important for you should be, that you feel comfortable with the breeder you are about to buy the dog from. If the breeder answers all your questions you might have, and trys to assist you in any issue you might have. Be upfront, and expect the breeder to be upfront. Consider if you are to buy in Europe, that many Europeans do speak English, but maybe just not very well. So you might have the feeling that some replays may sound harsh, when the are not ment to be.
To your question about paying half now, and the rest upon recieving the dog........ I would never do that again, got burned once, thats enough for my taste. No breeder that I know in my vacinity would do that either. Only time I can picture a scenario like this would be, if I totally trust that certain buyer and that there is a history of good dealings with that person.
Wish you good luck with your dealing. Ulli Dresbach

I have been reading so much on here about people getting cheated....no papers after you pay for the pup??? I cant believe i got so lucky....my dogs papers came with him when he arrived, all neatly in a folder with pictures of him, his mother and father, laminated to the folder.....no restrictions, nothing like that at all....only request from the breeder was, make sure to leave the middle name VON, and if i ever did breed him (which i won't..couldnt handle all the BS im hearing that comes with that)...but to only breed him with german.....so far, he is very healthy (knock on wood)....ears were up by about two months, great temperment, great with my kids and other dogs, learns everything i try to teach him VERY fast learner, even tho i have no exper. in training....very high drive for anything i throw.....far as i can tell, great bite, loves tugging, everything he carries or bites is done with his full mouth, don't know if this matters but he will push me backwards to get a deeper bite, as far back in his mouth as he can....LOVES tracking, (me with no exper..and he's already very good at that, sooo very cool)....
so enough bragging...sorry bout that...im just counting my blessings....
just a reminder, it's not all bad.......sorry for those that it is tho.....and remember, i know its been said many times....what goes around comes around....they will get theirs....
