Q Man,

If I’m selling a dog and someone wants to x-ray it prior to purchase at my expense – I would be glad to do that IF they pay a deposit first. In such case, if everything checks out good, I can have some certainty that they will buy the dog. If it doesn’t check out good – I will return the deposit.

Otherwise I can only picture me paying for the additional x-rays for each interested buyer who then can just say – Sorry, we decided to go with another dog (we were just curious) etc – can get quite costly!

LBS,

I've seen several breeders that offer a 48 or 72 return policy on puppies if the vet finds a serious health condition - of course, buyer pays for vet visit, and typically has to provide documentation of any health problems found from the vet's office.

A young dog for sale SHOULD already be Xrayed, whether Prelims or Finals, and you should be able to search the OFA database for the dog to see the ratings for yourself.  www.offa.org is their web site.  If the dog has gotten PennHIP evaluation, I do not know if there is a on-line database that can be searched.  However, there should be some way to verify the results.

Any DECENT breeder worth looking into should happily provide documentation of hip ratings of their breeding stock, and should have some sort of replacement/refund policy for a dysplastic dog.  Granted, there are many breeders who provide no guarantees, even though they have quality dogs, but I wouldn't personally take the chance, no matter how many podium dogs they parade.
