Trailrider..I am there. I can make my own job wherever I go. And GARD thinks I am crazy for wanting to move to Montana. Horses and dogs is all I ever cared about as a kid. I've grown up "some" but living in the country, on land I can do what I want on, has and always will be my dream. America just isn't what I used to think it was. We brag about our free country and all our rights, as they take more and more rights away daily.

Sometimes I think we were number one and at the top, now there is nowhere left to go but down from there. Scary thought but it seems to be taking place before my eyes.

I don't know if I'd call this "dog friendly" but rural West Virginia has about the most lax laws that I've seen.  I live in Wood County and outside the city limits there isn't even a leash law.  Oy!  Lots of stray dogs running about as a consequence.  However, damn fine place to build a kennel I suppose.

However, when scoping out property in WV, watch out for the heavily wooded parcels with old beat up trailers with a distinct chemical smell.  D'oh!

Thanks everyone.

I don't know if I could handle the cold of Montana or Ohio, but if it came down to dealing with the cold or losing my dogs, I would take the cold.

I have been looking at places in Virginia and West Virginia. I'll watch out for chemical smells.

I heard there's a great Schutzhund club down in the Eugene neck of the woods.  Flooding in Lane county is very different than flooding in Tillamook county!

Anika,

Sorry to trouble you, but unfortunately WV has had more meth busts per capita than any other state, hence the reference.  However, this is not representative of the population as a whole and you are more than welcome to set up shop in our lovely state.  Real estate truly is among the cheapest in the nation.

If you like it real hot you could always come to south of Atlanta, Lamar county is very lax with their dog laws, and plenty of places to train too!

SchHBabe- No trouble, every area has there good and bad areas. It is nice when someone is willing to help someone who is not from the area, so that they don't unknowingly hit one of the bad spots.

fillyone- The place I am in now doesn't flood bad, usually goes down in a couple of hours. One year we did move the horses out, since the forcast showed that the rain wasn't going to let up for a few days. Turned out the water was gone by afternoon. If if floods in the middle of the night and I still have horses in pasture, there is no safe way  to get to them.  I just don't want the constant winter stress of the chance of flood, anymore.

I found a great place in N. California, 12 acres, all level and usable, house, grannyunit, 7 stalls, arena, round pen, all irrigated, visiable from the freeway for easy advertizing, just off an off ramp for easy acces. Now I am waiting for the head of the county's animal control to call, so I can find out how hard it will be to get the county permits for the kennel. It looks like getting the license is easy and once you get it you don't have to have an inspection every year to renue.. But talking to one of the animal control's office ladies, it sounds like, to get the kennel building permit,  you have to build the kennels then the county will inspect it and decide if you can have the pemit for the kennel building. I guess I got snippy, I told the lady that I was not going to buy the place, build the kennels, bring my dogs and then find out I can't have them. Hopefully the head of the department can clarify things more.
