Sugarbear.... good stuff, you just need to cut back. It is most likely why he picks, he's just never really hungry cuz he gets so much!

by DKiah on 21 August 2007 - 02:08

Just so you know an adult dog (which he is close to than being a puppy) should eat about 2 - 5 % of his ideal adult weight, that includes raw meaty bones and muscle meat/organ/veggie mixes.. my females get anywhere from 5 - 9 lbs of food a day when they are nursing!

He's just trying to tell you he's full!! He looks fine.... we feed twice a day BTW....

I feed raw (mostly) to my adults twice daily! Their larger meal is in the morning. Late in the evening, I usually feed pork neck bones.

If I feed twice, I feed the meat and bones in the morning. Liver, gizzards, heart and yogurt in the evening.

Nice dog...You can cut his food back and feed      TWICE   daily     the reason we feed smaller portions twice a day is the BLOAT problem that gsd or large breed dogs can encounter if they eat large portions ,gobble down ,especially the meal with the kibble...Glad you are doing the raw...

It would be advantageous to skip a meal or skip a day during the week....let him find out what hungry is......more undivided attention,,,,,,,alway fast our dogs anyway when training or tracking the night and day before.......A hungry dog will work for the treats you give for reward....

sounds like you got a plan and just keep the dog slim....if you llike you can add ester c to make sure the hips and collagen are being supplied plenty, along with some fish oil and yogurt every now and them for an ice cream treat....I eat ice cream the dogs get yogurt...

Yup Yellow. Mine didn't want to work tonight, he felt the need to sniff a spot on the grass instead, so he goes to bed hungry. Maybe he will focus tomorrow.

hey guys, I go by the 10 minute rule, if you don't start within 10 minutes you lose it, HOWEVER just so you guys know, there ARE dogs that would just as soon starve. I always was a stickler with my 10 minute rule with clients until I got a dog that WOULD rather go hungry. Of course he is a small breed, but still. He was a papillon that by all estimates with his height and bone structure should have weighed about 9.5-10 lbs. He would NOT eat kibble when I got him. Not bad kibble, but the high end stuff and I tried every higher quality kibble known to man. This dog was stubborn but I figured I always get them in the end and if that's all he's offered he'll eventually eat and too bad for him. I offered a couple of pieces of kibble always in the bowl here and there because little dogs could get hypoglycemic pretty quick, but would give him the meal on schedule, and very rarely did he even touch the few pieces. After a few days of being offered and not eating he was down to FOUR and a half pounds and completely emaciated. I finally had to give in or lose my dog to starvation. I took him to the vet and he was healthy otherwise, vet said it's behavioral. I asked the vet if this was normal because I've had tons of client dogs over the years and always had this plan in place and says that while it's not common, he does see some dogs now and then that WOULD starve themselves to death, or darn close to it. I finally found the trick (stupid me, I have to place some soaked kibble and some raw patty on a paper plate (won't eat it from any other kind of bowl cause he can't see out from anything higher), warm to room temperature, make him THINK my other dog is going to get some. THEN and only then he'll eat. Oh, and I have to continuously rotate the kibble because after awhile he'll refuse it again.) Yes this flies in the face of EVERYTHING I tell my students to do (he's basically trained me to feed him whatever he wants) but my point is, there ARE some dogs that would do something so silly as starve themselves. I never would have believed it if I didn't live with such a dog. Oh and btw, he is 8 lbs now (I put him on satin balls and got the weight on pretty quick) still underweight but not emaciated. He's not at ideal either though, hip bone and ribs show somewhat, though there IS some layer of fat there. BTW I think the shepherd mentioned above is just being offered too much and doesn't need it, he looks good in the picture. My point only was that it's not true that dogs won't starve themselves. Maybe MOST wouldn't, but my little demon boy will. This dog is NOT an airhead btw....Smart as a whip. He reminds me very much of a border collie and will do just about anything if he thinks HE wants to. He's done some agility and a little conformation and some studio work. So no airhead whatsoever...he just chooses to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it.

A lot of german shepherd puppies pull that on the new owner....new home , no pups to contend with over the food chain , and my ganny fed me this way and your different....lets see what i can by with.....that not how i was fed before...and then the new owner gets upset and starts pulling can food out, meat ,, cooks a chicken  , give it scrapes, with gravy and muschroom soup on it, and lots of cheese to make it tasty.....call me and i go balistic........pup is using u......

Your dog is fine and hes not pulling anything....jst cut his food.....let him wonder if hes gonna get it.....I feed in a kennel, because I have more that one or two to feed....mine eat the bowl , the bag and anything in the way ......and scream for more.....I actually leave my dogs slightly hungry on purpose.....and they are all very nicely rounded with ribs showing....

DKiah -

I was looking at the same feeding guidline, 3%  -  5% of body weight.  This would put him at about 3lbs - 5 lbs per day.  He's not getting even the low end of that.   He is 28 inches, and most of his ribs are visible.   I agree with the just about all of the advice given above and probably need to be more strict with him, and that he appears to be healthy and getting proper nutrition.  That, said, I guess I have to question the 3%-5% guideline at this point.

by Langhaar on 22 August 2007 - 13:08

If you feed raw you should be feeding between 2 - 3% of his adult bodyweight or IDEAL bodyweight.

This may go up and down depending on temperament, temperature, work etc.

Twice a day is advisable for dogs that suffer from GDV it also maintains a stable blood sugar level and breaks up the day
