Hey Blitzen,
Don't forget that the SV's radiographs are done at 12 months before the dogs have reached skeletal maturity!

My young male prelimed fair (due to laxity) and OFA'd Excellent at 2.

I guess I'll be redoing those xrays. :)

Louise, do you think the SV will raise the age limit? I've heard talk that they are considering 18 months for the minimum age.
GSMom, a prelim of fair and then an excellent? Wonderful news for you! I'll bet you were surprised. It seems to me that a lower rating due to laxity just might correct itself as the dog matures. DJD is not going to get better. I had the opposite happen with a male malamute, good on his prelim at 18 months, OFA fair at 24. Go figure......

I think this set is also poor positioning. The knee caps are not straight up and that indicates to me that the legs are not rotated enough!

Blitzen,
That must be a dream! Not if it affects the market for selling young German dogs who, at 18 months, may be both titled and breed surveyed (provided the dog's second birthday is within the same calendar year)--and SOLD the next week.
Remember that the SV is just now getting around to a mandatory elbow registry. I can recall when Dr. Funk was asked (at a California seminar some years ago) his thoughts about ED (no, I don't mean erectile dysfunction). He denied an hereditary component to ED and said that, should the condition occur, they would just "put a screw in it"!!
Perhaps 25 years ago, I had a friend with American lines with a newly-purchased, young male GSD (limping with pano when he got off the plane). On his OFA prelims, the dog was considered as dysplastic due to joint laxity. At the age of 2 years, he received a rating of OFA "good".

Same story here...I had a female with Pano who was below the GSD median at one year of age as evaluated by PennHip, then went OFA Good after two years of age. I could see a difference in the xays if my memory is correct...she definately tightened up some in the ligaments. If you really like a dog, don't rush it...the hips might improve.
