I used to feed Exceed, and many other brands, but now I feed Canidae All Life Stages, inbetween feeding raw, I swear I'm never changing brands again, does anyone else feed Canidae?, and how do you like it?, let me know..... Mira just had her last litter, the pups are very big & healthy, very content. Just before she had them I was feeding her whole purdue chickens, talk about a dog being in heaven! She was one happy girl!

Most prepared dog foods are made by but a few dog food plants in the United States. All must meet U.S.D.A. guidelines and are inspected on a regular basis. To a large degree it does not matter which plant makes the food, as long as the ingredients are correct "as labelled". Compare this to the use of machine shops to manufacture machine parts. Does it matter which machine shop made the part as long as it conformed to blueprint specifications? No, it does not unless the machined part is a specialty item that requires unconventional machining methods. For that type of work one goes to a specialty shop. If you remember a post I made several months ago titled "The Secret Life of Bob-O" then you can remember that for several months I worked in a plant that manufactures dry dog food, and there were many "brands" made there for sale in the parent company's grocery stores as well as many discount stores. The ingredients were basically the same, however the formulation was different for different dry dog foods. I know that I am comparing the manufacture of dry dog food to that of precision parts, and it is a good comparison here. As far as the dog food plants are concerned, a compound mixer is a compound mixer, a steam boiler is a steam boiler, an extruder is an extruder, a dryer is a dryer, and a bag hanger is a bag hanger. All of the plants use machinery that is virtually identical compared plant-to-plant. Do some plants have quality control issues? Yes. Is it ongoing? Yes. Is the dry dog food sometimes cross-contaminated with another "brand"? Yes, that happens when the hoppers develop a horizontal leak and some product shifts from one hopper to another. So, in the end, the only question that is important is "does this food meet its implied specifications?" If the answer is "yes" then it matters not where it was manufactured. If anyone has technical questions about the manufacture of dry dog food, then send me a PM or an e-mail. Now as before, I will not identify my former place of employment. Best Regards, Bob-O

I had fed Sam's Club at one point and noticed my dogs coats were looking dull but when I switched to Solid Gold WOW what a huge difference it made. Definately worth spending the extra money. I never realized how much of a difference I'd see in the different brands of dog food. I always thought dog food was dog food like pizza is just pizza. LOL I have a friend that actually started feeding Solid Gold for her dogs after I showed her the difference in my dogs coats but she opted to mix the Sam's Club with the Solid Gold to make it last longer. It made an inprovement but still not quite the results I saw with my dogs.

I'm not sure what Sam's club your shopping at but we have been using Exceed Dog food to supplement our Units dogs for almost seven years now and have never had dog food that looked anything like the food you have shown in the picture.  Our dogs are high performance working K9's.  They have a very controled and scrutinized diet.  If you compare the ingredients of Exceed with that of Eukanuba's high performance food the only difference is fish. Everything else from the ingredients to the nutrition contents are the same.   We have never had an issue with this food and it has never had different texture, size or color. For seven years six bags 45lb bags a week the food has been the same and consistent and never have I seen any little hearts, nor have our dogs ever had issues... from weaning pups to whelping bitches to our retired seniors, they have all eaten exceed and done very very well. Our vet loves our dogs and always looks forward to seeing them because it's usually only for bi annual check ups or mission follow up checks.

If you really want to know what a food is like. Try it. You know your dog and it's needs. We have tried and tested  this food with our dogs and have no complaints.

Yellowrose, I couldn't agree with you more on Exceed.  What do you think of Royal Canin GSD 24 Maxi?

I have to find a cheaper yet healthy dog food available in Anchorage.  I bought 20 bags of expensive Wellness with sweet potato and Canine Caviar, and it is not lasting very long, especially considering that I also feed about 50% raw meat and bones.  I also see no differences in the stools, the coats, anything for two times the cost of other good dog foods which do contain grains like corn.  (Canine caviar does have millet).  Once upon a time I fed Costco's Kirkland chicken or lamb and rice dog food, it seemed to work just as well.  I like to feed Red Paw and Naional dog foods, but I have to travel a distance to get them and I'd rather not have to do that.  I have run out of raw salmon, which is too bad, because THAT definately shows in the dogs' health and coat!

Awwww....I'll quit moaning my dog food blues!

BTW, you are a sharp woman, YR.
